Czech box office May 21-24: ‘The Mandalorian and Grogu’ lands with less-than-stellar opening

The Mandalorian and Grogu opened at the top spot at the Czech box office this weekend, according to the latest from the Czech Film Distributors’ Union. The first Star Wars film in cinemas since 2019 opened with just CZK 7.74 million (CZK 9.03 million including Wednesday previews), less than half of what The Devil Wears Prada 2 earned in its opening weekend earlier this month.

For comparison, The Rise of Skywalker brought in CZK 33 million during its December 2019 opening weekend. It’s not all bad news: The Mandalorian and Grogu still managed to top Solo: A Star Wars Story, which earned just CZK 8.5 million in its May 2018 debut.

A warm weekend in Czechia saw box office totals significantly dip compared to the past few weeks, with holdovers The Devil Wears Prada 2 and Michael both seeing significant drops.

The Devil Wears Prada 2 fell 65.6 percent to add CZK 3 million to its four-week tally of CZK 57.8 million. The fashion-themed sequel has now passed Project Hail Mary, which has earned CZK 55 million over nine weeks of release, as the highest-grossing 2026 film at the Czech box office. Michael fell 62.9 percent in its fourth week of release to add another CZK 2.46 million to its total earnings of CZK 46.7 million.

Despite the precipitous drops, those films still fared better than The Super Mario Galaxy Movie, which tumbled a massive 79 percent to finish fifth with CZK 548,000, bringing its eight-week total to CZK 36.6 million. Family films suffered the most this weekend, with the much-derided Animal Farm tumbling a whopping 91 percent in its second weekend of release.

Among new releases, Passenger debuted in fourth with a soft CZK 648,000. André Øvredal‘s horror film stars Lou Llobell and Jacob Scipio as a young couple who begin a new life on the road, only to be haunted by a mysterious curse.

Screening locally only in a Czech-dubbed version, the 25th anniversary re-release of DreamWorks’ classic animated film Shrek came in sixth at the box office with CZK 501,000.

Danish family film Curly Burly (Krølle Bølle) opened in 15th place with CZK 166,000. The troll-themed film, which combines elements of live-action and animation, is also screening locally exclusively in a Czech-dubbed version.

Five Plums (Pět švestek), the latest feature from Oscar-winning Czech filmmaker Jan Svěrák (Kolya), brought in CZK 273,000 from limited preview screenings. It will challenge high-profile new horror releases Backrooms and Obsession for the top of the Czech box office charts next weekend.
