Renate Reinsve in Backrooms (2026)

Czech box office May 27-30: ‘Backrooms’ steps into the top of the charts; ‘Obsession’ debuts fourth

Kane ParsonsBackrooms led a strong weekend at the Czech box office, according to the latest from the Czech Film Distributors’ Union. The liminal horror film based on the 20-year-old filmmaker’s YouTube series opened to CZK 6.78 million in its first weekend of release, with a global tally of $118 million (CZK 2.5 billion)—not bad for a $10 million budget.

The Mandalorian and Grogu tumbled more than 50 percent in its second week of release but still held on to the second spot at the Czech box office. The first Star Wars film in cinemas since 2019 took in CZK 3.77 million to bring its two-week tally to CZK 14.3 million.

What a Way to Go (Pět švestek), the latest film from Oscar-winning Czech director Jan Svěrák (Kolya), debuted to a soft-ish CZK 3.55 million to finish third. Given the film’s older-skewing demographics and limited competition, it may have strong legs headed into the summer months.

Global horror smash hit Obsession, from filmmaker Curry Barker, debuted in fourth with CZK 2.13 million. The film opened in the U.S. two weeks back, and strong word-of-mouth has resulted in an incredible two weekends of rising box office revenues stateside.

The Devil Wears Prada 2 and Michael both continue to hold strong heading into their second months of release, finishing fifth and sixth, respectively, at the Czech box office this weekend. The Devil Wears Prada 2 took in CZK 1.91 million to bring its five-week total to CZK 60.1 million, while Michael netted CZK 1.79 million to bring its six-week total to CZK 49.4 million.

Among other new releases, Czech gangster drama Bastardi: Kde Majeř? opened in seventh with CZK 1.77 million. The film is the fifth entry in writer-director Tomáš Magnusek’s long-running series of Bastardi movies, following members of the Czech underworld.

The Pout-Pout Fish, an Australian-U.S. animated film based on the popular children’s book by Deborah Diesen, debuted in ninth with CZK 660,000. Nick Offerman voices the titular character in the original English-language release, but the film is screening locally only in a Czech-dubbed version.
