Spider-Man: Brand New Day continued to rule the Czech box office, holding the No. 1 spot for a fourth consecutive weekend according to the latest data from the Czech Film Distributors Union. The Marvel sequel took CZK 11.95 million from 52,726 admissions, down 25.9 percent from the previous weekend. Its local total has now climbed to CZK 150.5 million from 691,204 admissions, putting it among the year’s biggest theatrical hits and keeping it comfortably ahead of the summer’s other major releases.
The Odyssey is proving an equally formidable draw. Christopher Nolan‘s epic earned another CZK 9.27 million from 32,652 viewers in its sixth weekend, slipping just 2.6 percent from the previous week. That gives The Odyssey a remarkable CZK 136.7 million total and 551,431 admissions in Czech cinemas. Despite opening several weeks before Spider-Man: Brand New Day, it remains close enough behind to keep the race for the summer’s top film interesting.
Family audiences once again turned out for PAW Patrol: The Dino Movie, which held third place with CZK 3.88 million. The animated adventure fell just 5.1 percent in its third weekend, an unusually strong hold for a film in the middle of the summer season. It has now passed CZK 21.4 million locally, with 121,987 people having seen the latest big-screen adventure of the canine rescue crew.
Insidious: Out of the Further provided the weekend’s highest-profile new competition, opening at No. 4 with CZK 3.61 million from 17,314 admissions. The sixth entry in the supernatural horror franchise follows a young woman with the ability to bring spirits into the mortal world becomes the target of malevolent forces.
After eight weeks in theaters, Minions and Monsters still isn’t ready to leave the top five. The animated sequel brought in another CZK 1.35 million from 7,086 viewers, falling just 4.9 percent despite facing a crowded summer marketplace. Its Czech total has now reached CZK 62.2 million.
Tom & Jerry: Forbidden Compass, a Chinese-produced animated feature and the franchise’s first fully computer-animated feature-length movie, sold 7,759 tickets for CZK 1.32 million. The film, originally released in China last year, sends the familiar cat-and-mouse duo into a fantasy adventure involving a mysterious compass. Prague cinemas are screening it exclusively in a Czech-dubbed version.
Following its Karlovy Vary premiere, Šimon Holý’s Chica Checa made its commercial debut in seventh place with CZK 1.21 million from 7,029 admissions. The Czech-French-Slovak comedy-drama stars Pavla Tomicová as a widowed village postwoman whose life is disrupted when her son, played by Jan Cina, returns home from France with a secret: he is gay and works as a successful drag queen.
Spa Weekend came in at 11th, taking in CZK 560,000 from 2,745 admissions. Leslie Mann, Isla Fisher, Michelle Buteau and Anna Faris star as four friends reconnecting for a getaway in the American comedy from The Hangover screenwriters Jon Lucas and Scott Moore. The film has had a rough reception from critics.
The romantic comedy One Night Only landed at No. 15 with CZK 425,000 from 2,141 admissions. Callum Turner and Monica Barbaro play two singles whose paths repeatedly cross on the one night each year when single people are legally permitted to have sex.
Japanese manga adaptation Blue Lock rounded out the week’s new releases at No. 17, earning CZK 359,000 from 1,832 admissions. The live-action film brings Muneyuki Kaneshiro and Yusuke Nomura’s soccer manga to the screen under director Yusuke Taki.
