Oscar-winning film editor Joe Walker, known for his collaborations with Denis Villeneuve on Dune, Arrival and Blade Runner 2049, will be a special guest at this year’s Future Gate sci-fi film festival in Prague.
The 13th edition of Future Gate opens at Kino Lucerna on Sept. 28 and runs through Oct. 4 before traveling to eight other Czech cities. Along with Walker’s appearance, the Prague program will feature Czech premieres of new science-fiction films that previously screened at festivals including Berlin, Toronto, Tribeca and Montreal’s Fantasia.
This year’s festival is organized around the theme “Geopolitics and Resources of the Future,” exploring how climate change, energy, data and technological development could reshape global conflicts and political power.
Oscar-winning editor Joe Walker comes to Prague
Walker has become one of Hollywood’s most prominent film editors through his long-running collaboration with Villeneuve. He received the Academy Award for editing Dune: Part One in 2022 after previous Oscar nominations for Villeneuve’s Arrival and Steve McQueen’s 12 Years a Slave.
His other credits include Villeneuve’s Sicario and Blade Runner 2049, along with McQueen’s Shame and Widows. He has received five BAFTA nominations and six American Cinema Editors Eddie Award nominations, winning the latter for Arrival.
Walker began his career at the BBC’s film department at Ealing Studios after studying music at the University of York. He initially worked in sound editing before moving into picture editing, with early television credits including Jonathan Creek and The Lakes. His feature-film work before his major Hollywood collaborations included The Escapist, Harry Brown and Brighton Rock.
His musical background has also remained part of his career. Walker composed the score for the BBC/HBO drama Dirty War, while his compositions have been performed by the Royal Philharmonic Orchestra in London.
Future Gate will complement Walker’s Prague appearance with screenings of two films he edited, Arrival and Blade Runner 2049, in its Legends section. Ridley Scott’s original Blade Runner will also screen alongside the 1982 sci-fi classic Star Trek II: The Wrath of Khan, marking the 60th anniversary of the original Star Trek television series, and Rintaro’s 2001 anime Metropolis.
International festival discoveries get Czech premieres
Future Gate’s main competition will feature seven films, with several arriving in Czechia after appearances on the international festival circuit.
Among them is Takahide Hori’s stop-motion Junk World, a follow-up to Junk Head, which previously won both the jury and audience awards at Future Gate. Freaks II, meanwhile, continues the Canadian sci-fi story launched by 2018’s Freaks and comes to Prague shortly after its appearance at Montreal’s Fantasia International Film Festival.
The lineup also includes a new zombie film from the director of South Korean hit Train to Busan, while the documentary competition brings a portrait of The Critics, a group of young Nigerian filmmakers who became internationally known for creating ambitious science-fiction shorts with extremely limited resources. The documentary previously received recognition at the Tribeca Festival.
Other selections range from an Australian dark comedy built around a time loop to an animated exploration of human intimacy in the near future that premiered in the Perspectives section of this year’s Berlin International Film Festival. Short films, documentaries and student productions will round out the program.
Following its Prague run at Kino Lucerna from Sept. 28 through Oct. 4, Future Gate will travel to Brno from Oct. 5-11. Further editions will be held in Hodonín, Šumperk, Olomouc, Boskovice, Hradec Králové, Ústí nad Labem and Plzeň through late November.
