Czech box office Sept. 10-13: ‘The Odyssey’ shows no signs of slowing down

The Odyssey held the Czech box office crown for a third consecutive weekend, continuing a remarkably durable run nearly two months after its release. Christopher Nolan‘s epic dipped just 10.6 percent to CZK 5.62 million, bringing its nine-week total to CZK 167.74 million. That puts it less than CZK 7 million behind Spider-Man: Brand New Day, and with the Marvel blockbuster declining more quickly, The Odyssey now has a realistic chance of overtaking it in the coming weeks.

Spider-Man: Brand New Day remained in second place with CZK 3.18 million, a relatively modest 19.7 percent drop in its seventh weekend. The Tom Holland-led sequel has now earned CZK 174.4 million from nearly 798,000 admissions, maintaining its position as the biggest of the summer’s blockbusters for at least another week. After opening to a huge CZK 43.8 million in late July, however, it may soon surrender its cumulative lead to The Odyssey.

PAW Patrol: The Dino Movie actually gained ground in its sixth weekend, rising 3.1 percent to CZK 1.65 million and climbing back into third place. The animated adventure has now crossed CZK 30 million at the Czech box office, with more than 171,000 admissions to date. Its longevity has been particularly impressive: after opening to CZK 7.58 million in early August, the family film has remained among the country’s four highest-grossing movies every weekend since.

Czech comedy Perfect Day (Dokonalý den) slipped from third to fourth as its first full weekend gave way to a more conventional sophomore decline. After a strong CZK 2.32 million wide-release debut last weekend, the film fell 42.6 percent to CZK 1.33 million. It has now accumulated CZK 4.92 million from more than 28,000 admissions, including preview screenings.

Practical Magic 2 was the weekend’s highest new entry, but Sandra Bullock and Nicole Kidman‘s return couldn’t cast much of a spell on Czech audiences. The long-awaited sequel opened in fifth place with CZK 1.13 million, or CZK 1.27 million including earlier screenings, from 6,341 admissions overall. The result represents a relatively soft Czech debut compared with the film’s performance in the U.S.

Belgian-French animated adventure The Girl in the Clouds made an unusual leap into the chart at No. 9, earning CZK 598,000 after playing in just one cinema the previous week. Directed by Philippe Riche, the film follows 11-year-old Providence and her guinea pig Airbag after they discover a magical pen that makes whatever it writes come true. The movie is being shown locally exclusively in a Czech-dubbed version.

South Korean sci-fi epic Hope debuted at No. 10 with CZK 558,000 from 2,928 admissions. The latest film from The Wailing director Na Hong-jin boasts an international ensemble including Hwang Jung-min, Zo In-sung, Jung Ho-yeon, Taylor Russell, Alicia Vikander and Michael Fassbender, and follows an isolated community facing a mysterious creature after wildfires cut off communications. Hope competed for the Palme d’Or at Cannes in May and is screening in Czech cinemas in Korean with Czech subtitles.

New Czech tragicomedy The Healing Effects of Self-Deception (Léčivé účinky sebeklamu) landed at No. 12, taking CZK 486,000 from 2,669 weekend admissions. Directed by Adolf Zika, the film adapts Eric-Emmanuel Schmitt’s 1996 play Enigmatic Variations, which was originally written for Alain Delon. Martin Stránský and Ondřej Sokol lead a cast that also includes Jitka Čvančarová and Vica Kerekes.

The Gallagher brothers’ reunion translated into a modest Czech theatrical audience for Oasis: Don’t Look Back in Anger, which opened at No. 14 with CZK 351,000 from 1,716 weekend admissions. Directed by Will Lovelace and Dylan Southern and written by Steven Knight, the documentary chronicles Oasis’ 2025 reunion tour through rehearsals, backstage footage and performances, along with the first joint interview with Liam and Noel Gallagher after more than 15 years of estrangement. The film arrives in Czech cinemas just days after its world premiere at the Venice Film Festival.

Finally, Anthony Bourdain biopic Tony opened in 16th place, earning CZK 276,000 from 1,534 admissions. Dominic Sessa stars as a 19-year-old Bourdain drifting through Provincetown in the summer of 1975, decades before becoming one of the world’s best-known culinary personalities. Directed by Matt Johnson, the film also stars Antonio Banderas and Emilia Jones, and focuses on the future writer’s formative experience working in a restaurant kitchen while still struggling to figure out what he wants from his life.
