Prague-shot ‘Extraction 2’ gets first official trailer ahead of June release

Netflix has released the first teaser trailer for Extraction 2, which was filmed in and around Prague (with a brief excursion to Vienna) last winter. Production on the sequel to one of the streaming platform’s most-viewed original movies took place in the Czech capital from November 2021 through March 2022, with reshoots on the sequel wrapping last November.

The action-packed teaser for Extraction 2 showcases a prison riot sequence with star Chris Hemsworth shot on the outskirts of Prague, along with a helicopter-and-train chase filmed on rural Czech railways. The footage offers the first official glimpse of the blockbuster after Netflix unveiled a behind-the-scenes first-look last fall.

In Extraction 2, Hemsworth returns as black ops mercenary Tyler Rake, who apparently died at the end of the first movie but is back in action. The teaser trailer informs us that Rake was indeed pronounced clinically dead after the events of the first movie, but fought back to appear in the sequel. The film takes place nine months after the events of the first movie, following Rake’s recovery.

Plot details for Extraction 2 have been kept under wraps, but it involves a deadly mission similar to the events of the last film: this time around, Rake has now been hired to rescue the daughter (Tinatin Dalakishvili) of a ruthless Georgian gangster. The teaser focuses on Rake’s attempts to break her out of a maximum-security prison.

Locations around Prague are apparently standing in for those in rural Georgia for the Netflix sequel.

Extraction 2 also stars Golshifteh Farahani, Daniel Bernhardt, Justin Howell, Adam Bessa, Tornike Gogrichiani, Megan, Anderson, Patrick Newall, and Anthony J. Vorhies.

Sam Hargrave returned to direct the sequel, with producers Joe and Anthony Russo (who also filmed The Gray Man in Prague) coming back on as producers. Joe Russo also penned the script for Extraction 2, based on the graphic novel Ciudad by Ande Parks, Fernando León González, Eric Skillman, and the Russo brothers.

Extraction set a record for the most-watched debut for a Netflix original when it was released in April 2020, with 99 million households tuning in within the first four weeks. By the end of that year, it had become the fourth-most-watched original film of all time on the streaming platform.

Extraction 2 will debut on Netflix on June 16, 2023.
