Russian filmmaker Pavel Talankin, co-director and protagonist of the Oscar-winning documentary Mr Nobody Against Putin, has been awarded honorary citizenship of Prague 1 in recognition of his efforts to document Russian wartime propaganda and its influence on children.
Talankin received the honor during a ceremony at Kaiserstein Palace on Malostranské náměstí on Thursday, Sept. 3. Prague 1 cited his “extraordinary civic courage” in documenting the transformation of Russia’s education system following the country’s invasion of Ukraine, and his defense of freedom and democratic values.
The award comes less than six months after Mr Nobody Against Putin, which Talankin directed with American filmmaker David Borenstein, won the Academy Award for Best Documentary Feature. The Danish-Czech production became the first Czech documentary to win an Oscar and the first Czech film to receive an Academy Award since Jan Svěrák’s Kolya won Best Foreign Language Film in 1997.
From Russian schoolteacher to Oscar-winning filmmaker
Talankin was working as a teacher, videographer and event coordinator at a school in Karabash, an industrial city in Russia’s Chelyabinsk region, when the invasion of Ukraine began in February 2022. His position required him to document school activities, giving him unusual access as Russia increasingly incorporated pro-war messaging into its education system.
That footage became the foundation of Mr Nobody Against Putin, which records teachers being required to deliver government-approved messages while students take part in military exercises and other activities designed around the war effort.
Talankin initially recorded the material as part of his job but increasingly turned his camera toward what was happening around him. After attracting unwanted attention, he ultimately fled Russia with the footage, which was developed into the documentary in collaboration with Borenstein and producers in Denmark and Czechia. Talankin has since been living in the Czech Republic.
In its November 2025 review, The Prague Reporter called Mr Nobody Against Putin “an urgent and invaluable document of life inside contemporary Russia,” praising the unusual access provided by Talankin’s position within the school.
“A lot of what Mr Nobody Against Putin portrays feels like it should have been secretly captured by amateur footage,” the review noted. “But Pavel is a trained filmmaker with access to proper equipment, and he knows where to point his camera and what questions to ask his subjects.”
The film premiered at the Sundance Film Festival, where it received a Special Jury Award, before going on an extensive international festival run. It later won a BAFTA and culminated its awards campaign with the Oscar for Best Documentary Feature in March.
At the Academy Awards, Talankin used his acceptance speech to draw attention to civilians living under war. “There are countries where instead of stars, drones and bombs fall from the sky,” he said before calling for an end to wars.
Prague 1 honors Talankin and Czech producers
Talankin was the only living recipient of honorary Prague 1 citizenship at Thursday’s ceremony. Four other honors were awarded posthumously to conductor and musician Václav Hybš, painter Jiří Kornatovský, lawyer and politician Jaroslava Janderová and multimedia artist Helena Leisztner Kroftová.
The ceremony also recognized the Czech team behind Mr Nobody Against Putin. Producers Radovan Síbrt and Alžběta Karásková received the Prague 1 Award for their contribution to the documentary and its international success. Both are producers with Czech production company PINK, which played a key role in the Danish-Czech co-production.
“Prague 1 is a place where culture, public life and major social events have met for centuries,” Prague 1 Mayor Terezie Radoměřská said during the ceremony. She added that the recipients demonstrated through their work that “freedom, responsibility and an active relationship with society cannot be taken for granted.”
The district had established a connection with Mr Nobody Against Putin before its Oscar success. Prague 1 financially supported the film’s Czech premiere at Archa in November 2025, which included a discussion with Talankin. After the Oscar win, Talankin, Síbrt and Karásková were formally received by Prague 1 representatives at Old Town Hall on March 31, where officials recognized the film’s cultural and social impact.
Thursday’s honorary citizenship takes that recognition a step further, singling out Talankin not primarily for the awards the documentary has accumulated but for the personal risks involved in creating it.
According to Prague 1, the honor recognizes Talankin’s courage in documenting Russian wartime propaganda and ideological influence on schoolchildren, work that ultimately forced him to leave his home country. What began as footage recorded by a teacher in a small Russian city has now brought Talankin not only an Academy Award, but formal recognition from the Prague district he now calls home.
