Netflix has released the first official images for Extraction 2, which was filmed in and around Prague last winter, through an exclusive behind-the-scenes first look as part of this week’s TUDUM event, an online showcase of upcoming Netflix productions.
The footage showcases star Chris Hemsworth against a wintry Czech backdrop that utilized locations on the outskirts of Prague. The landscape for Extraction 2 represents a big change from the first film, which took place in Dhaka, Bangladesh.
The behind-the-scenes featurette also teases some of the filmmaking techniques utilized for the new film, including a single-take sequence that director Sam Hargrave promises will top an elaborate 11-minute one-shot action sequence from the earlier film.
“With a title of “2” behind your name, you have to bring at least twice the action,” says Hargrave.
“For Extraction 1, we had a major action sequence that felt like one continuous shot. We call that a ‘oner.’ For Extraction 2, we’re pushing that even further with a sequence more intricate and extreme than before.”
“We’ve got a real helicopter landing on the rooftop of moving trains. It’s pretty damn exciting. I’m very proud of what we’ve done. The end result will blow people’s minds.”
While most of Extraction 2 was shot on the outskirts of Prague, parts of one of the major action setpieces glimpsed in the behind-the-scenes featurette – the helicopter chase scene – was filmed on the streets of Vienna in Czech neighbor Austria.
After filming the centerpiece chase scene of The Gray Man on the streets of Prague, perhaps producers Joe and Anthony Russo wanted a change of location for their latest film.
While plot details for Extraction 2 have been kept under wraps, the story reportedly features a Georgian gangster and a maximum-security prison escape. Star Chris Hemsworth returns as mercenary Tyler Rake, again out to perform a risky rescue operation.
Extraction 2 also stars Golshifteh Farahani, Tinatin Dalakishvili, Justin Howell, Adam Bessa, Tornike Gogrichiani, Megan, Anderson, Patrick Newall, and Anthony J. Vorhies.
Judging by some of the license plates glimpsed in the behind-the-scenes trailer, the rural Czech locations outside of Prague might be standing in for those in Georgia.
Like its predecessor, Extraction 2 is based on the graphic novel Ciudad by Ande Parks, Joe Russo, Anthony Russo, Fernando León González, and Eric Skillman.
A release date for Extraction 2 has not been confirmed by Netflix, but look for the film to drop on the streaming service in early-to-mid 2023.
Extraction 2 might be the last large-scale film production to be shot in the Czech Republic for some time. The country’s new incentives plan caps rebates at 150 million crowns ($6 million), less than half of what Extraction 2 earned in rebates (365 million crowns, or about $15 million).
