Sky TV series ‘Extinction’, with Paapa Essiedu, now shooting in the Czech Republic

Extinction, a new action thriller produced by Sky TV about a man forced to live the same day over and over again, Groundhog Day style, is now filming in the Czech Republic. Production on the series began earlier this year in the United Kingdom before moving over to Czech locations.

Extinction stars Paapa Essiedu, breakout star of HBO’s I May Destroy You, in the lead role. The British actor also appeared in Sky’s well-received Gangs of London last year.

Tom Burke (Only God Forgives), Anjli Mohindra (Bodyguard), and Caroline Quentin (British Men Behaving Badly) star among the ensemble cast, which also features Charly Clive, Rudi Dharmalingam, Lorn Macdonald, and Vinette Robinson.

Extinction follows Essiedu’s character as he witnesses the end of the world, then goes back in time over and over again to try to prevent it.

Joe Barton (Netflix’s Giri/Haji), who was recently announced as the new showrunner for HBO’s The Batman, serves as series writer on Extinction, with individual episodes of the show directed by Marco Kreuzpaintner, Akaash Meeda, and Laura Scrivano.

“Joe is a genius, as demonstrated by his huge success over the last few years, so to work with Marco and the cast and crew, to bring his vision to life is just hugely thrilling,” Essiedu said through a press release.

“The scripts are full of detail, tension and wit, and I’m excited to see where we go with George and the rest of the characters.”

Extinction began production in January, filming in Bristol and other locations in the United Kingdom. Production in the Czech Republic began over the Easter weekend.

Filming is currently taking place in Postoloprty, in the Ústí nad Labem region, which is standing in for a Romani village. Additional scenes are slated to film in Prague, Most and other areas of the Czech Republic throughout the spring.

Co-star Burke is no stranger to the Czech Republic; he previously shot the TV series The Musketeer in Prague.

Extinction is scheduled to air on Sky in the UK in 2022.
