Production on the third season of the Apple TV+ science fiction series Foundation, based on the novels by Isaac Asimov, is officially underway in Prague, with cameras rolling from the end of May. Filming for Foundation in the Czech Republic is slated to run in Prague throughout the summer and into early fall.
Foundation stars Jared Harris, Lee Pace, Lou Llobell, Leah Harvey, Laura Birn, and Terrence Mann in a complex story of a band of exiles on distant planets who unite to save the Galactic Empire. The series was created by David S. Goyer and Josh Friedman, with the first season debuting on Apple TV+ back in 2021.
That first season was shot at Troy Studios in Ireland, along with location work in Spain, Malta, and Iceland, but season 2 was largely filmed in and around Prague and the spacious Prague Studios in Letňany last summer, with Milk and Honey Pictures coordinating the local shoot. Foundation‘s second season is slated to premiere on Apple TV+ on July 14.
Foundation seems to have found a home in the Czech capital, with production returning to Prague from May 26. There are a total of seven Foundation novels, and while the show reportedly differs considerably from Asimov’s original creation, there’s plenty of material should Apple renew the project past season three.
Currently, Foundation is being filmed on location in Most, outside of Prague, through June 20. Production is taking place at the brutalist Repre Cultural Centre (Kulturní dům Repre), a fitting location for a dystopian science fiction series.
The Repre Cultural Centre has been a popular location for Prague-based shoots in recent years, with portions of last year’s The Crow and the Sky series The Lazarus Effect, which shot in Prague under the title of Extinction in 2021, both filming in the Most landmark, which was originally constructed in the late 1970s.
Foot traffic in areas of Most’s city center have been restricted over the next two weeks as production of Foundation gets underway. Filming in the area will reportedly include elaborate practical effects including pyrotechnics.
Foundation is one of three major TV productions taking place in Prague this summer, with the second season of AMC’s Interview with the Vampire and the third season of Amazon’s The Wheel of Time also filming in the Czech capital. British actor Ben Daniels has featured supporting roles in both Foundation and Interview with the Vampire, and appears in Amazon’s other big fantasy series, The Lord of the Rings: The Rings of Power.
A release date for Foundation‘s third season has not been confirmed, but it could premiere in mid-2024 if post-production follows a similar timeline as season two.
