Production on Extraction 2, a sequel to one of Netflix’s most-watched movies, has now resumed outside of Prague after a break for the holidays. The action movie starring Chris Hemsworth is scheduled to film in the country through March.
Little is known about the plot of Extraction 2, which was originally scheduled to film in Sydney, Australia, before moving to the Czech Republic due to coronavirus-related concerns in Australia. Star Hemsworth later bemoaned the move, perhaps not keen on trading summer in the outback for below-freezing temperatures in rural Czechia.
Still, Hemsworth was able to enjoy a Christmas holiday in the Austrian Alps during a pause in production, alongside wife Elsa Pataky and their children. Brother Liam Hemsworth was even able to join them over the holidays.
In video and photos posted to Instagram, the Hemsworth clan are seen having fun in the wintry European locales.
Production on Extraction 2 has since resumed in rural locations outside of Prague. In the film’s lone publicity still, Hemsworth’s character Tyler Rake can be seen aboard an armored vehicle in the wintry Czech countryside.
Extraction 2 is directed by Sam Hargrave from a screenplay by Joe Russo; the writer and his brother Anthony Russo, the directing team behind Avengers: Infinity War and Avengers: Endgame, also serves as producers on the Netflix project.
Last summer, the Russo brothers shot portions of The Gray Man, starring Ryan Gosling and Chris Evans, in central Prague. They may have been drawn back to the Czech Republic for the Extraction sequel following their positive experience on what was promoted as the most expensive Netflix production to date.
Unlike The Gray Man, which had a heavily-publicized shoot through the center of Prague last summer, details surrounding the Czech production of Extraction 2 have been unusually scarce. It’s not yet known if filming for the sequel will extend into the city of Prague.
Despite being six weeks into production, Extraction 2’s supporting cast around Hemsworth haven’t even been announced. Given the events of the first film and the setting of the sequel, it’s unlikely that many who appeared in the original movie will return.
Hemsworth himself has been a source of info for sparse details on Extraction 2, sharing some behind-the-scenes photos and video from production on Instagram. In one of his latest posts, he sarcastically praises the tranquility of the Czech countryside, while an excavation machine digs up ground behind him.
Shortly after release, Extraction was publicized as Netflix’s most-watched original film, with 99 million viewers. According to the latest data provided the company, which measures viewership in hours watched, the film has since been passed by this fall’s Red Notice, starring Dwayne Johnson, Ryan Reynolds, and Gal Gadot.
A release date for Extraction 2 has yet to be confirmed. With filming running through March, look for the sequel to bow on Netflix in late 2022 or early 2023.
