Adam Sandler, Carey Mulligan to shoot ‘Spaceman’ in Prague

Spaceman, a new Netflix adaptation of the novel Spaceman of Bohemia by Czech writer Jaroslav Kalfař set to star Adam Sandler and Carey Mulligan, will be filmed on location in Prague and the Czech Republic later this year.

The new film was originally slated to begin production in the Czech Republic in February, but the ongoing coronavirus pandemic delayed those plans. It was unknown if the delay would push the project out of Prague, but new information provided by the Czech Film Commission confirms that Spaceman is still on schedule to film in the Czech capital.

A start date on production for Spaceman, however, is still TBA.

Sandler was cast in the lead role for the new Netflix film last autumn, while Mulligan was recently confirmed as his co-star in Spaceman last month. The actress was nominated for an Oscar this year for her role in Promising Young Woman, but ultimately lost out to Frances McDormand for Nomadland.

Spaceman will feature Sandler as Jakub Procházka, a fictional Czech astronaut on a months-long mission in outer space. Mulligan will presumably star as his wife Lenka, who Jakub communicates with on Earth during his journey through space.

While Sandler is starring in the lead role for the Netflix film, Spaceman does not fall under his production company Happy Madison’s deal with the streaming service, which has resulted in films like The Week Of, Murder Mystery, and Hubie Halloween.

Spaceman will be directed by Swedish filmmaker Johan Renck, who last received widespread acclaim for his work on the HBO miniseries Chernobyl. Renck also directed for TV series such as Breaking Bad, The Walking Dead, and Vikings. Kalfař’s novel Spaceman of Bohemia has been adapted into a screenplay by Colby Day.

Channing Tatum, Reid Carolin, Peter Kiernan and Michael Parets (Free Association), and Tim Headington, Lia Buman and Max Silva (Tango Entertainment) serve as producers for Spaceman. Executive producers include director Renck, Ben Ormand, and Barry Bernardi.

Spaceman joins a number of high-profile projects to shoot in Prague and Czech locations this year.

White Bird: A Wonder Story, starring Gillian Anderson and Helen Mirren, recently wrapped shooting in the Czech capital last month, and filming is still underway on a new Netflix adaptation of All Quiet on the Western Front, starring Daniel Brühl. The Gray Man, starring Ryan Gosling and Chris Evans, is slated to film in Prague this summer.

One Life, starring Anthony Hopkins and Johnny Flynn as Holocaust hero Nicholas Winton, was also slated to begin production in the Czech Republic this spring, but production has been pushed back due to effects of the ongoing pandemic.

International TV productions shooting in Prague this spring include Amazon’s Hanna, Sky’s Extinction, the French Cold War series Totems, and a new adaptation of Dangerous Liaisons for Starz. Production on the first season of Amazon’s Wheel of Time was disrupted during the pandemic but should also resume in the coming weeks, and will immediately lead into shooting for the show’s second season.
