Production on White Bird: A Wonder Story is now underway in the Czech Republic, and the first cast member has been officially confirmed.
Gillian Anderson, who rose to fame as Agent Dana Scully on The X-Files and recently won acclaim for her performance as Margaret Thatcher on the Netflix series The Crown, has been cast in the lead role for the new movie.
On Thursday, local TV station Nova filmed Anderson’s arrival at Prague’s Václav Havel Airport. Deadline and the Czech Film Commission later confirmed Anderson’s casting in White Bird: A Wonder Story.
Anderson has just received Golden Globe and SAG nominations for her performance as Thatcher in season four of The Crown. She also stars in the Netflix series Sex Education, which will premiere its third season later this year.
White Bird: A Wonder Story, a prequel/spin-off of the 2016 family film Wonder, tells the story of a French family who hides a Jewish girl in their home during World War II. Anderson will play Vivienne, the family’s matriarch.
The new movie is based on a graphic novel by R. J. Palacio, who also wrote the bestselling novel that became Wonder, starring Julia Roberts and Owen Wilson. Marc Forster (World War Z, Quantum of Solace) will direct the film, from a script by Mark Bomback (War For The Planet of the Apes).
White Bird: A Wonder Story began its Czech shoot earlier this week, with scenes shot in a high school in Liberec. It will move to other locations across Prague and the Czech Republic over the next two months.
In April, scenes set in contemporary New York, potentially with Roberts, Wilson and other members of the Wonder cast, will be filmed in Prague.
