Jaafar Jackson in Michael (2026)

Czech box office April 23-26: ‘Michael’ moonwalks to the top of the charts

The Czech box office has a new champ this weekend as the musical biopic Michael danced to the top of the charts with CZK 13.9 million, according to the latest numbers from the Czech Film Distributors’ Union. It’s an especially strong opening for the genre, and just off the CZK 15.5 million earned by Bohemian Rhapsody in its 2018 debut; that film went on to gross CZK 266 million, setting the all-time record at the Czech box office until it was surpassed by Avatar: The Way of Water.

The strong debut from Michael knocked The Super Mario Galaxy Movie down to second after topping the Czech box office for three weeks. The animated sequel to 2023 megahit The Super Mario Bros. Movie fell a hefty 42.7 percent, earning CZK 2.65 million to bring its four-week total to CZK 28.5 million. While predominantly playing in Prague in a Czech-dubbed version, original English-language screenings can also be found at select cinemas.

Project Hail Mary came in at number three, but is showing stronger legs than the Mario movie at the Czech box office. The Ryan Gosling-led hard sci-fi story fell 38.9 percent in its sixth week of release to take in CZK 2.12 million and bring its total earnings to a hefty CZK 48.44 million.

The Czech comedy Někdo to rád v Plzni (which translates as Some Like it Hot in Pilsen) fell 42.7 percent to come in fourth in the Czech charts, earning CZK 908,000 to bring its four-week total to CZK 15.13 million. Miroslav Donutil, Marek Taclík, and Martin Pechlát lead the ensemble comedy about a group of diverse citizens in the Bohemian city.

Lee Cronin’s The Mummy maintained its position at fifth in the box office charts following a light opening weekend, falling 40.1 percent to earn CZK 905,000 and bring its two-week total to CZK 2.87 million. Horror titles have seen frightfully low box office tallies in Czech cinemas this spring, with Ready or Not 2: Here I Come and They Will Kill You also underperforming.

This weekend was light on new releases outside of Michael. Rally from Paris to the Pyramids, a Norwegian animated film and the latest in the Flåklypa Grand Prix series (also known as The Pinchcliffe Grand Prix in English), debuted in 13th with CZK 235,000. The feature is screening locally only in a Czech-dubbed version.

The new Czech comedy Ovce žerou první (Sheep Eat First) opened in 17th with CZK 136,000. The film from director Jan Musil stars Michal Balcar as a man who falls into the world of motivational speakers as he attempts to win back his girlfriend.
