Uma Thurman in Kill Bill: The Whole Bloody Affair (2025)

Czech box office April 16-19: ‘Kill Bill: The Whole Bloody Affair’ slashes into the top five

The Super Mario Galaxy Movie maintained its top position at the Czech box office over the weekend, according to the latest data from the Czech Film Distributors’ Union. The animated sequel to 2023 megahit The Super Mario Bros. Movie fell 32.7 percent but earned CZK 4.63 million to bring its three-week total to CZK 25.37 million. While predominantly playing in Prague in a Czech-dubbed version, original English-language screenings can also be found at select cinemas.

Project Hail Mary stayed at number two despite a larger drop than the Mario sequel. The Ryan Gosling-led hard sci-fi story fell 35.5 percent in its fifth week of release to take in CZK 3.48 million and bring its total earnings to a hefty CZK 45.27 million.

The Czech comedy Někdo to rád v Plzni (which translates as Some Like it Hot in Pilsen) fell a hefty 51.3 percent but maintained its position at third on the Czech charts, earning CZK 1.58 million to bring its three-week total to CZK 13.55 million. Miroslav Donutil, Marek Taclík, and Martin Pechlát lead the ensemble comedy about a group of diverse citizens in the Bohemian city.

This weekend’s new releases failed to put up much of a challenge for the holdovers, but the top earner was a surprise: Kill Bill: The Whole Bloody Affair, a 275-minute re-edit of Quentin Tarantino‘s Kill Bill: Volume 1 (2003) and Kill Bill: Volume 2 (2004) that premiered in local cinemas for the first time. Despite a limited release, the epic debuted at fourth over the weekend with CZK 1.56 million.

The weekend’s big Hollywood release, Lee Cronin’s The Mummy, opened at fifth with CZK 1.51 million. Horror titles have opened to shockingly light box office results in Czech cinemas this spring, with Ready or Not 2: Here I Come and They Will Kill You tallying similarly disappointing totals.

The new Czech film They Call Me Lars debuted in sixth with CZK 1.48 million. Martin Hofmann stars in the title role of a hardboiled detective investigating a murder on the seedier streets of Prague.

The concert event BTS World Tour ‘Arirang’ in Japan: Live Viewing charted seventh despite a single live screening in cinemas across the country on Friday, raking in CZK 1.22 million. The K-pop band’s live concert film lost about a third of its Czech cinema viewers following last weekend’s concert film from Goyang.

Czech marionette movie Hurvínkova cesta do Tramtárie (Hurvínek’s Journey to Tramtária), released to celebrate the 100th anniversary of the popular puppet character, opened in 10th with CZK 726,000. The character created by Gustav Nosek has been performing on stage since 1926.

Just cracking this weekend’s top 20 was György Pálfi‘s Hen, which debuted to CZK 118,000 despite limited release in Prague. The film follows the journey of the titular fowl across a rural Greek landscape.
