Prague-shot ‘Tribes of Europa’ debuts on Netflix

Tribes of Europa, a new dystopian sci-fi series from the German production team behind the acclaimed Netflix series Dark and the Oscar-winning The Lives of Others, premieres tomorrow (February 19) on Netflix in the Czech Republic and worldwide. The series was primarily shot on Czech locations in and around Prague in 2019.

The six-episode series, which was primarily filmed in German but debuts on Netflix with English-language audio dubbing and subtitle options, takes place in the year 2074 after wars have ravaged Europe and the continent is broken into smaller micro-states.

The New Scientist says Tribes of Europa is like “Game of Thrones, but with Brexit.”

Henriette Confurius (Narcissus and Goldmund), Oliver Masucci (Dark), David Ali Rashed, Emilio Sakraya, and Melika Foroutan star in the series’ lead roles.

English actor James Faulkner, who featured in Game of Thrones as Randyll Tarly, appears in a supporting role as a (presumably) English general.

Tribes of Europa was created by Philip Koch, who also served as series director alongside Florian Baxmeyer, and series writer with Jana Burbach and Benjamin Seiler.

A total of 44 shooting days for Tribes of Europa took place at Czech locations from September through December of 2019. In Prague, extensive shooting took place at Barrandov Studios.

Other Czech locations Tribes of Europa filmed at include Prague’s Výstaviště Exhibition Grounds, the former mine and military prison camp Rolava near the German border, and the Mladá Boleslav jail.

Scenes were also shot at the Hrázský rybník pond in Stvolínky, North Bohemia, and in locations outside of Prague, including the Poldi ironworks in Kladno and town of Vrané nad Vltavou.

Tribes of Europa wasn’t entirely shot in the Czech Republic; filming for the series also took place in Croatia.

Similarly-themed series such as Britannia and Knightfall have also shot in the Czech Republic in recent years, though Tribes of Europa is unique in that it takes place in a future post-apocalyptic Europe ravaged by war.
