Ruby O. Fee, Frederick Lau, and Salber Lee Williams in Brick (2025)

‘Brick’: Prague-shot Netflix thriller with Matthias Schweighöfer gets debut trailer ahead of July release

A mysterious wall, a locked-down apartment building, and no way out.

That’s the starting point of Brick, a new German-language Netflix thriller set to premiere globally on July 10. Re-teaming Army of Thieves co-stars Matthias Schweighöfer and Ruby O. Fee, the film follows a couple who wake to find their apartment building encased in a surreal, impenetrable wall—and quickly discover they are not alone.

Directed by Philip Koch (Tribes of Europa), Brick was filmed primarily at Prague’s Barrandov Studio over a 40-day shoot in early 2024. The newly released trailer offers a tense, claustrophobic glimpse into what Netflix promises is a high-concept sci-fi mystery packed with psychological suspense and survival drama.

Returning collaborators and a rising genre slate

Schweighöfer and Fee reunite in Brick after their successful pairing in 2021’s Army of Thieves, a prequel to Zack Snyder’s Army of the Dead, which also filmed in Prague. Schweighöfer, a frequent Netflix collaborator, plays Tim Arnovsky, while Fee stars as Olivia Neill. The new film focuses on the characters’ relationship tested by extreme and unusual conditions.

Director Philip Koch brings experience from previous dystopian narratives. His Netflix miniseries Tribes of Europa, also filmed in Prague and throughout the Czech Republic, explored a post-apocalyptic Europe through a sci-fi lens. In Brick, Koch builds on that aesthetic with a narrative centered on confinement, paranoia, and human resilience.

The supporting cast includes Frederick Lau (Victoria, The Wave), Murathan Muslu (Cracks in Concrete), Salber Lee Williams (Ghost Island), and Alexander Beyer (Daliland, Good Bye Lenin!), among others. Cinematography is by Alexander Fischerkoesen, with music by Anna Drubich. Theresia Anna Ficus served as production manager.

Production companies behind Brick include Nocturna Productions, W&B Television, and Prague-based Wilma Film, with casting by Iris Baumüller of Die Besetzer. Producers include Koch himself alongside Quirin Berg, Max Wiedemann, Benjamin Munz, and Katrin Götter.

Prague’s Barrandov Studio hosts Netflix thriller

Principal filming for Brick took place between January and March of 2024, with Prague serving as the main production base. Most scenes were shot inside Barrandov Studio, one of Europe’s largest and most historic film studios. Known for its large sound stages and specialized infrastructure, Barrandov has become a favored location for major international streaming productions.

Recent high-profile series shot at Barrandov include AMC’s Interview with the Vampire and Amazon’s upcoming Blade Runner 2099, cementing the Czech capital’s place in the European production landscape. The studio continues to attract large-scale, genre-focused projects thanks to competitive incentives, experienced crews, and versatile locations.

Though much of Brick takes place in a single building, the enclosed setting required significant set construction and visual effects work—areas where Barrandov’s facilities and technical teams played a crucial role.

Netflix has increasingly invested in German-language original programming as part of its broader European content strategy. Brick anchors the streamer’s German slate for 2025 and signals a continued commitment to high-concept genre storytelling from the region.

With its blend of psychological suspense, speculative mystery, and close-quarters tension, Brick is the latest addition to Netflix’s growing catalogue of international thrillers. It joins high-concept thrillers such as the breakout 2019 Spanish hit The Platform, which spawned a prequel released last year.
