Swedish-American actor Dolph Lundgren will return to Prague this December for a public appearance celebrating one of the defining roles of his career. Best known for playing Soviet boxer Ivan Drago in Rocky IV, Lundgren is the latest Hollywood star announced for the Czech capital’s Night with a Legend series following Arnold Schwarzenegger’s sold-out appearance earlier this year.
The event, scheduled for Dec. 12 at Empire Hall in Prague’s Slovanský dům, comes as the Rocky franchise approaches its 50th anniversary. Organizers say the evening will focus not only on Lundgren’s breakthrough in Hollywood, but also on his academic background, personal challenges, and decades-long career in film.
From chemical engineering to Hollywood action icon
Although audiences primarily know Lundgren as one of the defining action stars of the 1980s and 1990s, his path to Hollywood was far from conventional. Born Hans Lundgren in Stockholm in 1957, he earned a master’s degree in chemical engineering and received a prestigious Fulbright scholarship to the Massachusetts Institute of Technology before leaving academia to pursue acting.
His breakthrough came in 1985 with Rocky IV, where his portrayal of the imposing Soviet heavyweight Ivan Drago turned him into an international star. The character remains one of the most recognizable villains in sports movie history, and Lundgren reprised the role more than three decades later in Creed II.
Beyond the Rocky franchise, Lundgren built a prolific career across action cinema, starring in films including Masters of the Universe, Universal Soldier, The Punisher, Johnny Mnemonic, The Expendables series, and Aquaman. He has also directed and produced several action films over the past two decades.
Organizers say the Prague discussion will explore not only Lundgren’s film career but also his upbringing in Sweden, his relationship with his father, and his battle with kidney cancer. Lundgren revealed publicly in 2023 that he had spent more than a decade undergoing treatment before later announcing that the disease had entered remission.
The actor’s appearance was reportedly facilitated through entertainment attorney Patrick Knapp Schwarzenegger, nephew of Arnold Schwarzenegger, who also represents Lundgren.
A return to Prague nearly three decades later
While this December’s visit is centered on a fan event rather than filmmaking, Lundgren is no stranger to Prague. The actor previously spent time in the Czech capital while filming the 1995 action thriller Hidden Assassin, one of several international productions that chose Prague during the city’s rapid emergence as a major European filming destination in the 1990s.
Directed by Ted Kotcheff, Hidden Assassin used Prague locations to double for post-Cold War Eastern Europe and was among the wave of foreign productions that helped establish the Czech capital’s reputation for international filmmaking. Lundgren starred as a former CIA operative investigating a political assassination, with much of the production shot on location throughout Prague.
His return comes as Prague continues to attract major international productions while also hosting an increasing number of fan-focused events featuring Hollywood stars. The Night with a Legend series has previously brought figures including boxer Mike Tyson, Formula One champion Mika Häkkinen, and actor Jean-Claude Van Damme to the Czech Republic.
Schwarzenegger’s June appearance attracted significant attention, combining a live interview with audience questions and premium meet-and-greet experiences. Lundgren’s event is expected to follow a similar format, with ticket options ranging from general admission to packages that include a personal meeting with the actor.
