Minions and Monsters held onto the top spot at the Czech box office over a relatively slow summer weekend, according to the latest figures from the Czech Film Distributors’ Union. The animated family film fell a hefty 51 percent in its second weekend but still comfortably led the charts with CZK 5.3 million, bringing its domestic total to CZK 34.2 million.
Disney’s Moana debuted in second place with CZK 5.2 million, a surprisingly soft start for one of the year’s biggest family releases. The Czech opening falls in line with the film’s underwhelming global box office performance, falling well short of recent Disney animation launches in Czechia and trailing the debuts of both Minions and Monsters and Toy Story 5 earlier this summer.
Toy Story 5 dropped to third in its fourth weekend with CZK 2.1 million, down 43 percent from the previous frame. Despite the sizable decline, Pixar’s latest has amassed CZK 25.1 million locally and continues to hold in the local top 5 into its second month of release.
Low-budget horror hit Obsession continues its remarkable run in fourth place, dropping 33 percent to earn CZK 1.6 million. Curry Barker’s breakout thriller has now grossed CZK 28.5 million after seven weeks in Czech cinemas, making it one of the summer’s biggest success stories.
Czech comedy Po večerce rounded out the top five with CZK 1.54 million in its third weekend. Director Dan Pánek’s comedy slipped 36.7 percent but has now earned CZK 11.2 million since expanding into wide release.
Among the weekend’s other new releases, Evil Dead Burn opened in sixth place with CZK 1.42 million. The latest chapter in the long-running horror franchise follows a grieving widow who inadvertently unleashes bloodthirsty demons while staying with relatives in an isolated family home, delivering another dose of the series’ trademark supernatural carnage.
Czech documentary Dalai Lama – Ocean of Wisdom enjoyed a solid specialty debut in 11th place with CZK 494,000. Viliam Poltikovič’s film chronicles three decades of filming with the 14th Dalai Lama, combining rare footage with reflections on compassion, secular ethics, inner peace, and the Tibetan spiritual leader’s extraordinary life.
Finnish-British psychological horror Nightborn, starring Rupert Grint and Seidi Haarla, opened quietly in 17th place with CZK 201,000. The film follows a couple who relocate to a remote Finnish home, where a new mother’s growing fears about her infant lead to increasingly disturbing discoveries.
Elsewhere, limited summer screenings of Mamma Mia! proved enough to return the 2008 musical to the Czech top 20. The re-release earned nearly CZK 100,000, pushing the film’s lifetime local total to an impressive CZK 77.6 million.
