Ryan Gosling in Project Hail Mary (2026)

Czech box office March 26-29: ‘Project Hail Mary’ soars; Zdeněk Svěrák’s birthday party a blowout

Project Hail Mary continues to soar worldwide as well as at the Czech box office, according to the latest data from the Czech Film Distributors Union. The hard sci-fi film starring Ryan Gosling as a scientist on a mission to save the Sun fell just 3.7 percent locally in its second week of release, topping the charts with CZK 8.79 million and bringing its two-week total to CZK 22.78 million.

The Hollywood blockbuster had some surprising competition: Zdeněk Svěrák 90, the 90th birthday celebration of the beloved Czech actor and writer that was broadcast live to more than 100 cinemas across the country on Sunday evening. More than 20,000 people attended the one-off showing, generating CZK 5.32 million to come in second in this weekend’s charts.

Pixar’s Hoppers continues to do modest business in Czech cinemas, falling just 4.6 percent in its third week of release to earn CZK 3.16 million and finish third. The animated comedy about an animal lover who transfers her mind into a robotic beaver has now earned CZK 16.49 million over three weeks of release.

That’s no match for the juggernaut that is Zootopia 2, which surged 21 percent in its 18th week of release to come in fourth in the box office charts. The Disney sequel has now grossed a massive CZK 168 million at Czech cinemas and shows little sign of slowing down despite streaming availability.

The Czech comedy Někdo to rád v Plzni (which translates as Some Like it Hot in Pilsen) earned CZK 1.06 million in its debut weekend to chart fifth. Miroslav Donutil, Marek Taclík, and Martin Pechlát lead the ensemble comedy about a group of diverse citizens in the Bohemian city.

Among other new releases, the over-the-top action-horror film They Will Kill You fizzled out with just CZK 574,000. Zazie Beetz stars as a woman recently released from prison who infiltrates a hotel full of immortal cultists in order to save her sister.

The Magic Faraway Tree, a new adaptation of Enid Blyton’s classic children’s novel led by Andrew Garfield and Claire Foy, finished slightly better with CZK 891,000 to chart seventh. The film is screening mostly in a Czech-dubbed version in local cinemas, but the original English-language version can be seen at CineStar Anděl and Cinema City Slovanský dům.

A new Czech documentary from director Dan Svátek (Her Drunken Diary) about musician David Stypka titled Neboj, dýchej, čaruj earned CZK 383,000 in preview screenings three weeks ahead of its official release. Stypka died with cancer at the age of 41 in 2021.
