Ryan Gosling in Project Hail Mary (2026)

Czech box office, March 19-22: ‘Project Hail Mary’ launches to the top of the charts

In another strong weekend at the Czech box office, Project Hail Mary flew to the top of the charts with CZK 9.13 million, according to the latest data from the Czech Film Distributors Union. The heavy sci-fi story starring Ryan Gosling as a scientist on a mission to save the Earth’s sun has earned a total of CZK 11.3 million including last weekend’s preview screenings.

Last weekend’s champ Hoppers fell just 18.6 percent to take in CZK 3.31 million and finish second. The Pixar animated comedy about an animal lover who transfers her mind into a robotic beaver has now earned CZK 12.99 million over three weeks of release at the Czech box office.

The Czech comedy Birthday Wishes 2 (Přání k narozeninám: Křtiny), a sequel to the 2023 film Birthday Wishes, finished third with CZK 1.61 million, bringing its two-week haul to CZK 6.11 million. The film stars Eva Holubová and Jaroslav Dušek as new grandparents who insert themselves into their family’s lives.

Slasher sequel Scream 7 maintained its position at fourth in the charts, earning CZK 1.02 million and holding especially well for a horror film with just a 27 percent drop in its third week of release. The Neve Campbell-starring horror movie has earned CZK 9.34 million locally, and is officially the most successful Scream film both at the Czech box office and worldwide.

The animated family film Spinned, a fresh take on the Hansel and Gretel characters and co-production between the United Kingdom and Cyprus, debuted at fifth in the charts over the weekend with just under CZK 1 million. The film is screening locally only in a Czech-dubbed version.

Among other new releases, the Czech-Slovak drama Dancing with the Bear (Tanec s medvědem) debuted at 12th with CZK 423,000. The film stars Pavla Gajdošíková and Kryštof Hádek as expecting parents who struggle with the decision to continue a pregnancy with a child diagnosed with Down syndrome.

And following its Oscar win for Best Documentary, it’s nice to see Czech-Danish co-production Mr Nobody Against Putin re-enter the charts after 20 weeks of release and streaming availability. The film earned CZK 185,000 over the weekend to bring its total local gross to CZK 2.41 million.
