Czech box office, March 5-8: Pixar’s ‘Hoppers’ jumps into the lead; ‘The Bride!’ left at the altar

Pixar’s animated comedy Hoppers leapt into the lead at the Czech box office over the past weekend according to the latest data from the Czech Film Distributors Union, securing CZK 3.57 million and bringing its total including last weekend’s preview screenings to CZK 4.35 million. The film is primarily screening in a Czech-dubbed version in local cinemas, but original English-language showings can be found at select cinemas in Prague including Cinema City Slovanský dům and CineStar Anděl.

The family film knocked slasher sequel Scream 7 from the top of the box office charts, though the Kevin Williamson-directed film still took in CZK 1.84 million to come in second despite a 48.6 percent drop. The Neve Campbell-starring horror movie has earned CZK 6.52 million locally, and looks to become the most successful Scream film both at the Czech box office and worldwide over the coming week.

Wuthering Heights continues to hold strong in Czechia, coming in third with CZK 1.71 million after a modest 36.5 percent drop. The Gothic romance starring Margot Robbie and Jacob Elordi as ill-fated lovers Cathy and Heathcliff has now brought in CZK 20.38 million over four weeks of release.

Zootopia 2 also continues to hold strong after 15 weeks of release at the Czech box office. The animated Disney comedy finished fourth over the past weekend, with CZK 1.22 million bringing its total earnings to a massive CZK 164 million.

Rounding out the top five over the weekend was the Czech-Slovak “Covid western” Poberta, which earned CZK 1.17 million in its debut weekend in the wake of largely positive reviews. The new comedy from writer-director Ondřej Hudeček (The Nagano Tapes) follows a small-time criminal who returns to his hometown during the pandemic after being released from prison.

Also debuting this weekend, Czech audiences left Maggie Gyllenhaal’s The Bride! at the altar. The Frankenstein-meets-Bonnie and Clyde parody managed to earn just CZK 405,000 in its opening weekend despite premium cinema screenings including at Prague’s IMAX theater to come in 12th in the charts.

Spanish-Italian sports drama Idols also wiped out at the Czech box office, taking in just CZK 226,000 in its opening weekend to finish 19th.
