Czech box office, Feb. 12-15: Czech comedy ‘Když se zhasne’ blows past ‘Wuthering Heights’

After nearly three months of box office dominance, Zootopia 2 and Avatar: Fire and Ash were finally knocked off the top two spots of the Czech box office charts over Valentine’s Day weekend, according to the latest data from the Czech Film Distributors Union.

Two new releases surged past the 2025 box office champs as Zootopia 2 added CZK 4.63 million to its impressive haul of CZK 155 million to finish third and Avatar: Fire and Ash took in CZK 3.76 million to bring its total up to CZK 185 million, highest of all films released last year.

Czech comedy Když se zhasne (which translates as When it Goes Out) took home the top position, raking in CZK 6.88 million in its first week of release. The latest film from director Andy Fehu (One Man Show: The Movie) stars an ensemble cast including Petra Hřebíčková and Martin Pechlát, with a story surrounding the opening of a new restaurant.

Opening in second place was Wuthering Heights, the big, brazen new adaptation of Emily Brontë‘s landmark 1847 novel from director Emerald Fennell. The blockbuster romance, which led the U.S. box office over a holiday weekend in the States, stars Margot Robbie and Jacob Elordi as ill-fated lovers Cathy and Heathcliff and pulled in CZK 5.50 million to debut behind the Czech comedy.

This weekend’s other big release, Sony’s animated comedy GOAT, was a surprising fizzle at the Czech box office despite debuting in second place in the States. The basketball-themed animated tale took in just CZK 3.50 million to open in fifth, two spots behind the 12th weekend of Disney’s smash hit Zootopia 2.

Among other new releases, Crime 101 failed to crack the top ten, debuting with CZK 920,000 to open in 12th. The L.A.-set crime thriller from director Bart Layton (American Animals) stars Chris Hemsworth, Halle Berry, and Mark Ruffalo.

A full two weeks ahead of its official release, Czech comedy Nečekané léto (translating as Unexpected Summer) pulled in CZK 343,000 in limited preview screenings to come in 15th in this week’s charts.
