Czech streaming charts, Jan. 19-25: ‘A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms’ leads among TV series

After debuting in second place last weekend, The Rip was the most popular movie on streaming services over the past week according to data from aggregator JustWatch. The Miami-set police thriller starring Matt Damon and Ben Affleck and directed by Joe Carnahan opened to largely positive reviews; The Prague Reporter called it a “smartly assembled piece of Netflix-era genre filmmaking.”

Riding a wave of a record-breaking 16 Oscar nominations, Sinners surged back into the Czech streaming charts, rolling all the way to second for HBO Max. Ryan Coogler‘s genre-bending horror film starring Michael B. Jordan in dual roles earned nominations for Best Picture, Lead Actor (Jordan), Original Screenplay (Coogler), and 13 additional categories at the upcoming Academy Awards.

Another top Oscar contender, One Battle After Another continues to hold strong in its sixth weekend of streaming release on HBO Max. Paul Thomas Anderson‘s epic black comedy based on the novel Vineland by Thomas Pynchon stars Leonardo DiCaprio as a father attempting to save his daughter during a questionable military intervention led by a colonel from their past, played by Sean Penn.

How to Train Your Dragon, which charted first in its streaming debut last week, fell to fourth. The live-action remake starring Mason Thames and Gerard Butler made its streaming debut on SkyShowtime last week after cleaning up at the local box office last summer.

As Avatar: Fire and Ash continues to dominate the local box office, the 2022 documentary Avatar: The Deep Dive – A Special Edition of 20/20 surged up the local charts in its debut on Disney+. The hour-long special was originally produced to promote Avatar: The Way of Water.

The Game of Thrones prequel series A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms surged to the top of the Czech streaming charts over the past week according to JustWatch. The series, which takes place roughly 100 years in between the events of Game of Thrones and House of the Dragon, stars Peter Claffey and Dexter Sol Ansell as the titular characters from creator George R. R. Martin’s Tales of Dunk and Egg series.

Fallout dropped to second for Prime Video, but continues to chart strongly more than halfway through its release schedule. The action-comedy from producer Jonathan Nolan (Westworld), based on the popular series of Bethesda video games, has dropped the first six episodes of its second season and will release new episodes weekly on Wednesdays through Feb. 4.

Stranger Things dropped to fourth place over the past week, three weeks after releasing its season five finale on Dec. 31. The staggered release of the series throughout December instead of a single drop proved a wise move for the streaming giant, with its biggest series dominating the streaming conversation all month long and remaining popular well into January.

The Night Manager, which ousted Stranger Things from its month-long hold over the top spot two weeks back, rose past the Netflix series over the past week once again to chart third. The spy series, based on the novel by John le Carré and starring Tom Hiddleston as a British intelligence agent, has released five episodes on Prime Video, with the season finale dropping Feb. 1.

The Rookie, which recently premiered the Prague-shot debut episode of its eighth season on ABC in the States, fell to fifth among TV series over the past week. Earlier seasons of the Nathan Fillion-starring cop drama are streaming on Netflix and Disney+ in the Czech Republic.
