Czech box office Aug. 28-31: Music doc ‘Jarek’ leads slow weekend; ‘Weapons’ holds strong

Jarek, a new documentary about Czech singer-songwriter Jaromír Nohavica, opened at the top of the Czech box office this past weekend with CZK 1.73 million. The result underscores the enduring popularity of the sometimes-controversial Czech musician, who began his career in the 1980s under the watchful eye of the communist regime and would later accept the Pushkin Prize from Vladimir Putin for his translations of songs by Russian artists.

The only other new entry in this week’s top 10 was Caravan, which debuted in eighth with CZK 813k. The Italy-set road movie starring Anna Geislerová was the Czech Republic’s first movie to play in competition at Cannes in more than three decades when it premiered in the Un Certain Regard section back in May.

Two new Hollywood releases just barely made the top 20. The excellent crime thriller Caught Stealing, from director Darren Aronofsky, debuted in 18th with CZK 458k, just ahead of the limited re-release of Jaws. The dark relationship comedy The Roses, starring Benedict Cumberbatch and Olivia Colman, fared only slightly better with CZK 486k to come in 16th.

The Czech comedy Džob continues to hold strong, losing its top position this week after four weeks in first but coming in second with CZK 1.66 million. That’s just slightly ahead of F1 and Zach Cregger’s Weapons, both of which also earned CZK 1.66 million and continue to hold in the top 5 at the Czech box office heading into September.

Family films performed especially well in the final weekend before the start of the new school year, with The Bad Guys 2 and Lilo & Stitch both seeing a 10 percent boost in box office results compared to the previous weekend. A new animated film, the Dutch-Belgian-produced Miss Moxy, which is screening locally in a Czech-dubbed version, debuted in 13th with CZK 671k.
