Zootopia 2 continues an impressive run at the Czech box office with CZK 17.4 million in its second week of release, according to the latest data from the Czech Union of Film Distributors. The animated Disney sequel fell only 19.4 percent to bring its total earnings to CZK 44.2 million ($2.11 million) after two weeks of release.
Five Nights at Freddy’s 2 came in second with CZK 8.5 million in its opening weekend, a strong total but a far cry from the opening weekends of other hit video game adaptations (A Minecraft Movie) and horror sequels (The Conjuring: Last Rights) at the Czech box office this year. Globally, the Five Nights at Freddy’s sequel scared up a massive $109 million (CZK 2.3 billion) opening despite poor reviews.
Czech films Na horách and Invincibles held strong to occupy the next two positions on the Czech box office chart with CZK 3.14 million and CZK 1.51 million, respectively. Invincibles, which follows Czechia’s para ice hockey team leading up to the 2019 World Championships in Ostrava, displayed a minuscule 14 percent drop in its third week of release.
Rounding out the top five was Now You See Me: Now You Don’t, which scored CZK 1.1 million to bring its four-week total to CZK 15.7 million. The magic-themed sequel featuring an ensemble cast led by Jesse Eisenberg and Woody Harrelson has been a surprise hit worldwide this fall with a massive $209 million at the worldwide box office after four weeks of release.
In a light week for new releases outside of the Freddy’s sequel, the U.S.-German-Indian animated film Mission Santa: Yoyo To The Rescue finished eighth with CZK 426,000. The family film about an elf who goes to work at Santa’s high-tech North Pole is screening locally only in a Czech-dubbed version.
A re-release of the 2009 The Doors documentary When You’re Strange managed CZK 283,000 in limited screenings to come in 12th. The film, newly restored in 4K, was re-released globally to celebrate the 60th anniversary of the legendary American band fronted by Jim Morrison.
Two other concert films also cracked the top 20: Ben Cristovao – Eden 2025 – Live Show, a recording of the Czech singer’s sold-out performance in Prague back in June, earned CZK 236,000 to come in 13th, while The World of Hans Zimmer – A New Dimension, a new concert film from the composer’s Krakow concert, scored CZK 101,000 to finish 18th.
Some high-profile Hollywood films flopped at the Czech box office over the weekend. The solid survival story Not Without Hope managed a meager CZK 107,000 to come in 17th despite opening in Czechia a week ahead of the U.S., while the Jennifer Lopez musical Kiss of the Spider Woman didn’t even crack the top 20.
