Czech streaming charts Sept. 22-28: ‘Alien: Earth’ surges back to top among TV series

Superman maintains its top position on Czech streaming charts for the second straight weekend on HBO Max, according to data from global streaming tracker JustWatch. James Gunn‘s DC reworking, starring David Corenswet as the titular superhero and Nicholas Hoult as villainous Lex Luthor, failed to make much of an impact at the local box office during its July release but has been a hit on streaming just two months later.

Among other superhero flicks, Thunderbolts* continues to hold strong for Disney+, coming in seventh to maintain five weeks in the Czech streaming top ten. The MCU superhero film underperformed at the box office earlier this summer, but remains a strong player on streaming for Disney.

Surging back into second place for Netflix during a weekend without major releases was The Thursday Murder Club, a murder mystery set in an assisted living facility starring Helen MirrenPierce BrosnanBen Kingsley, and Celia Imrie. The Chris Columbus-directed film previously topped the Czech streaming charts for two weeks after its August release.

In third over the weekend was The Man Who Stood in the Way, a 2023 Czech historical drama from Petr Nikolaev (Lidice) about František Kriegl, the lone Czechoslovak politician who refused to sign the Moscow Protocol after being abducted to the Russian capital in the wake of the Soviet Invasion of Czechoslovakia.

Mantis, a new South Korean action film from debut director Lee Tae-sung, came in fourth on Czech streaming charts for Netflix. A spinoff of the 2023 Netflix hit Kill Boksoon, the new feature follows a Branded to Kill-like storyline about disparate assassins vying for the title of #1.

A pair of Christopher Nolan classics rounded out this week’s top 10, with 2010’s Inception coming in at number nine and 2014’s Interstellar ranking tenth. Hype is already growing for the director’s next film, with tickets to The Odyssey, releasing next July, already being sold at Prague’s IMAX cinema—the only one in the EU that will screen it in 70mm IMAX.

Alien: Earth surged back to the top spot among TV shows streaming in the Czech Republic after dropping the final episode of its first season last week. Expanding the world of the Alien franchise, the new series from creator Noah Hawley is now streaming in full on Disney+.

Storming back into second place is Wednesday, which continues to perform strong after dropping the first half of its second season on Netflix in August and the second half earlier this month. The series has seen some Czech-specific advertising, an unusual move for the streamer on the local market.

Coming in third among TV series in the Czech Republic is Alice in Borderland, which dropped its entire third season on Netflix last week. The hit Japanese sci-fi series, based on the manga of the same name by Haro Aso, a follows a group of friends fighting to return to their own world after being transported to a desolate futuristic Tokyo.

Prime Video original series continue to perform well locally, with Gen V, The Summer I Turned Pretty, and The Terminal List: Dark Wolf coming in fourth through sixth.

And The Rookie, the long-running L.A. cop drama starring Nathan Fillion streaming locally on both Disney+ and Netflix, also cracked the top 10 this week without releasing new episodes. The series’ eighth season, which partially shot in Prague earlier this year, is slated to premiere next January.
