Prague art gallery DOX launches rooftop summer cinema with Edison Filmhub

Prague 7 art gallery DOX and city center cinema Edison Filmhub have joined forces to launch a summer cinema throughout the months of July and August. Screenings will take place in the unique confines of the rooftop of the DOX building in Holešovice, next to the location’s massive Airship Gulliver.

A total of nine screenings have been prepared, and because the films are curated by Edison Filmhub, many of them will be English-friendly. Movies will be shown each Wednesday from July 5 at 9:30 p.m., and will be screened in their original language with Czech; more than half will also screen with English subtitles.

Screenings will take place on the terrace of the DOX+ building, adjacent to the giant airship, the centerpiece of the location. To keep noise levels down for local residents, sound will be broadcast through wireless headphones.

English-friendly screenings include Gauguin: Voyage to Tahiti (on July 12), which stars Vincent Cassel as 19th century artist Paul Gauguin, who escapes the bustle of Europe to settle down and work in Tahiti late in his career.

Leonora Addio, the latest film from acclaimed Italian director Paolo Taviani, will also screen with English subtitles (on July 19), as will Michele Placido’s Caravaggio’s Shadow, a drama centered on the Italian painter that will hit the DOX summer cinema as a special preview screening on August 9.

Director Mani Haghighi’s Pig, a satire of the Iranian film industry that centers on a blacklisted director and a serial killer slaughtering Iranian filmmakers, will screen at DOX summer cinema with English subtitles on August 16.

The DOX summer cinema festivities will culminate on August 30 with an English-friendly screening of Francofonia from director Aleksandr Sokurov (Russian Ark). The film tells the story of the Louvre art gallery in Paris during Nazi occupation in WWII, touching on themes of the timelessness of art.

Tickets to DOX summer cinema are 200 crowns, and can be purchased in advance online or on the day of the screening from 8:00 p.m. through 9:30 at the main DOX box office. DOX Club members save an extra 20 percent on summer cinema tickets.

In cast of inclement weather, screenings may be cancelled and tickets refunded. For more details about DOX summer cinema and a full program, check out the official DOX website.
