Ewan McGregor, daughter Clara to attend 2023 Karlovy Vary International Film Festival

Scottish actor and Star Wars veteran Ewan McGregor will be among the guests at this year’s Karlovy Vary International Film Festival, festival organizers announced this morning. The star joins an impressive lineup of special guests at this year’s festival that includes Russell Crowe, festival judge Patricia Clarkson, and Alicia Vikander, whom organizers have also just revealed will be on hand.

McGregor, who has won a Golden Globe (for his work in Fargo), an Emmy (for the Netflix miniseries Halston), and numerous other awards in his 30-year career in film and television, will be presented with the Festival President’s Award at this year’s Karlovy Vary fest.

The actor will present his latest film, You Sing Loud, I Sing Louder, in which his stars alongside daughter Clara McGregor, who will also be a special guest at this year’s film festival in Karlovy Vary.

Ewan McGregor burst on the film scene in the mid-1990s through his collaborations with director Danny Boyle, which included 1994’s Shallow Grave, 1996’s Trainspotting, and the following year’s A Life Less Ordinary, in which he starred alongside Cameron Diaz.

In 1999, McGregor took on the role that fans across the world would come to recognize him for: as Obi Wan Kenobi in Star Wars: Episode I – The Phantom Menace. He returned to play the character, who was originally portrayed by Alec Guinness in 1977’s Star Wars, in Attack of the Clones, Revenge of the Sith, and most recently the Disney+ series Obi-Wan Kenobi.

McGregor’s other memorable performances over the years have included roles in 2001’s Moulin Rouge for director Baz Luhrmann, Black Hawk Down for Ridley Scott, 2005’s Big Fish for Tim Burton, and 2010’s The Ghost Writer for Roman Polanski, among many others.

At this year’s Karlovy Vary International Film Festival, McGregor and daughter Clara will present director Emma Westenberg’s You Sing Loud, I Sing Louder, a 2023 road movie that premiered at this year’s South by Southwest (SXSW) film fest.

The stars play a father and daughter who “set out on a journey filled with unexpected encounters during which they find a way back to each other after a period of alienation.” Clara McGregor served as a producer on the film, with her father taking an executive producer credit.

The elder McGregor is currently filming the miniseries Gentlemen in Moscow, adapted from the Amor Towles novel, in Halifax.

This year’s Karlovy Vary International Film Festival will take place in the Czech spa town from June 30 through July 8. A full schedule has yet to be announced; keep an eye out for future updates including when to expect the stars to attend.
