Prague’s smaller independent cinemas reopened last week along with the Czech Republic’s latest round of easing Covid-19 lockdown restrictions, and Cinema City multiplexes have announced that they will be reopening their doors from Thursday, June 10.
As restaurants have been allowed to reopen their indoor areas as of this week, multiplexes will be allowed to sell refreshments for consumption within the screening halls. Strict sanitary measures including social distancing must still be followed.
“All current government regulations and will continue to be followed,” Cinema City states through a press release
“In all halls, so-called social distancing will be introduced, meaning there must be spacing of at least one free seat between individual groups of spectators.”
Cinema guests must have proof of vaccination, a negative test, or proof of recovery from Covid-19 before going to the cinema. The Czech Republic has recently launched an online system to obtain such certificates, but there still seem to be some hiccups, especially for non-citizens.
CineStar and Premiere Cinemas, the Czech Republic’s other large multiplex chains, have yet to confirm a reopening date but are likely to follow Cinema City’s lead and open their doors next weekend or shortly thereafter.
What can film fans expect to see in Prague when cinemas reopen?
A Quiet Place Part II, which lit up U.S. box offices this past weekend to the tune of nearly $60 million in what many are heralding as the return to normalcy at the cinemas, will debut in the Czech Republic as multiplexes reopen on June 10.
The Comeback Trail, a George Gallo comedy starring Robert De Niro, Morgan Freeman, and Tommy Lee Jones that did not light up U.S. cinemas, is also scheduled for release in the Czech Republic on June 10.
The following week, fans can look forward to the release of the Fast & Furious sequel F9, which has already opened in some Asian and European territories, Cruella, which bowed on Disney+ this past weekend, and Tom & Jerry and Godzilla vs. Kong, which both debuted on HBO Max back in March. Disney+ and HBO Max are not yet available in the Czech Republic, but should both be launched later this year.
Other holdover releases that will hit Czech cinemas in June include last year’s Oscar winner Nomadland, Kelly Reichardt’s acclaimed First Cow, Pixar’s Soul, the British horror film The Power, and American horror films The Unholy, with Jeffrey Dean Morgan, and Run, starring Sarah Paulson.
Horror sequel The Conjuring: The Devil Made Me Do It and animated family film Spirit Untamed, which will be released in the United States this upcoming weekend, will debut in Czech cinemas on June 24.
