Helen Mirren joins Gillian Anderson for ‘White Bird’, now shooting in Prague

White Bird: A Wonder Story is about a month into filming, and major roles for the film are still being cast. In addition to star Gillian Anderson, who has been shooting in the Czech Republic for the past four weeks, the production just confirmed another one: Helen Mirren, who will likely join production later this spring.

Mirren will play Grandmère, the grandmother of a supporting character in 2017’s Wonder, who will presumably narrate the WWII film from scenes set in modern-day New York. The New York scenes will be shot on Czech locations (presumably Prague) in April.

Currently, White Bird is shooting scenes with Anderson and other cast members on Czech locations, standing in for WWII-era France.

Ariella Glaser has been confirmed in one of the film’s leading roles as Sara, Mirren’s character as a young girl. As a Jewish teen in Nazi-occupied France, Sara goes into hiding with classmate Julien (Orlando Schwerdt) and his family. Anderson stars as Julien’s mother.

Bryce Gheisar has also been confirmed to reprise his role as Julian from the 2017 movie, the grandson of Mirren’s character and recipient of her story.

Owen Wilson, Julia Roberts, and Jacob Tremblay are also expected to reprise their roles from Wonder, if only briefly. Wilson and Roberts also serve as producers for White Bird: A Wonder Story.

As they star in scenes set in different eras, Mirren and Anderson are unlikely to shoot scenes together in the Czech Republic.

Helen Mirren is the only person to have won the acting triple crown (for roles on stage, film, and TV) in both the US and UK. She won an Oscar and a BAFTA for her role as Queen Elizabeth in 2006’s The Queen, a Tony and an Olivier for the same role in The Audience, four Emmys and a BAFTA TV award.

White Bird: A Wonder Story began shooting in the Czech Republic in early February, and will continue its three-month shoot through the end of April.

Marc Forster (Quantum of Solace, The Kite Runner) is directing from a script by Mark Bombeck (War for the Planet of the Apes, Live Free or Die Hard), based on R.J. Palacio’s graphic novel.

“I’m deeply honored to have Helen Mirren join us on this journey,” Forster stated in a press release.

“Beyond being a brilliant actress, Helen brings an immeasurable level of depth, humanity, and empathy to her roles, elevating any project she is a part of. She’s a true artist and I couldn’t be more excited to have her alongside our incredibly talented cast.”
