Prague’s Bio Oko Unveils 2017 Outdoor Summer Cinema

Bio Oko in Prague 7, one of three movie theaters run by Aerofilms (along with Prague 3. Kino Aero and Prague 1’s Kino Světozor), is already one of the hippest cinemas in the Czech capital, featuring a popular bar and unusual cinema seating that includes beach chairs and beanbags.

And this summer, Oko is set to further its appeal to Prague 7 residents and visitors.

The cinema will be opening a brand-new outdoor summer movie theater during the warmer months in nearby Výstaviště, the expansive (and underutilized) Prague exhibition grounds.

Decades after the once-popular drive-ins have dried up in the USA, summer cinemas have become a standby during the warmer months throughout the Czech Republic.

In Prague, examples of outdoor cinemas include those at popular summer locations Střelecký ostrov, Riegrovy Sady, Žluté lázně, Smíchovská náplavka, among many others. But always check listings – some cinemas don’t return each year, while new ones often pop up.

This year, Bio Oko’s new cinema, situated near the popular Stromovka park, is set to become one of Prague 7’s summer highlights.

The summer season will kick off next Wednesday, May 15, with a screening of the excellent Jim Jarmusch drama Paterson.

The cinema will be located in front of the exhibition grounds’ most prominent building, Průmyslový palác. Prague officials are billing it as “the city’s best technologically-equipped summer cinema.”

To preserve the quiet for the neighboring residential area, sound will be broadcast through headphones that can be rented for a refundable 100 CZK fee, though guests can also bring their own.

Movies start at 21:15, and will be broadcast nightly from Tuesday – Saturday. Admission: 120 CZK.

Here’s the program through the rest of March:

Wednesday, March 17: Paterson
