Czech box office June 25-28: ‘Supergirl’ crash lands as ‘Minions & Monsters’ dominates in previews

Supergirl crashed and burned at the Czech box office over the weekend, according to the latest figures from the Czech Film Distributors’ Union. The latest DC Studios release struggled to match the stronger openings of recent superhero films in Czechia, debuting in seventh place with just CZK 1.43 million; that’s less than a third of the soft Czech opening seen by Superman (CZK 4.4 million) last July.

Ahead of its official release this week, Universal’s Minions and Monsters led the Czech box office over the weekend, earning CZK 5.84 million in preview screenings. The Universal film will look to exceed tallies posted by Toy Story 5, which launched with CZK 6.51 million last weekend, and The Super Mario Galaxy Movie, which debuted to more than CZK 8 million earlier this spring.

Toy Story 5 slipped to second in its second weekend of release, falling a modest 14.2 percent to earn CZK 5.59 million. Disney and Pixar’s latest sequel has now grossed CZK 14.39 million after two weeks, holding particularly well compared to recent family releases and suggesting strong legs heading into the start of the summer holidays.

Czech comedy Po večerce (which translates to After Dinner), which expanded nationwide after two weeks of preview screenings, finished third with CZK 2.94 million, lifting its cumulative total to CZK 4.13 million. The comedy, starring Jakub Prachař and Martin Pechlát, posted by far the strongest increase among films already in release.

Scary Movie dropped a soft 32.7 percent in its fourth weekend to earn CZK 2.18 million, pushing the Wayans family revival past CZK 32.7 million overall.

Steven Spielberg’s Disclosure Day followed close behind with CZK 2.09 million, down 27.6 percent in its third weekend, bringing its total to more than CZK 16 million. Curry Barker’s indie horror hit Obsession added another CZK 2.08 million after slipping just 24.3 percent, taking its five-week total to CZK 21 million.

Among other new releases in a light weekend for debuts, Australian horror film Leviticus opened in 17th place with CZK 281,000.
