Reports that a new Monsterverse television project could film in Prague are gaining traction, following fresh industry reports pointing to a summer start date in the Czech capital. While local production sources have yet to confirm the shoot, the latest issue of the typically reliable Production Weekly lists a June start date in Prague for the new project set in the world of Godzilla and King Kong.
The new series is an untitled prequel to Monarch: Legacy of Monsters, part of Legendary’s expanding Monsterverse franchise for Apple TV+. While official confirmation on the Prague shoot is pending, the June start date would potentially align with studio availability as other major international series wrap work in the city.
Prague linked to expanding Monsterverse slate
The series will focus on a younger version of Colonel Lee Shaw, played by Wyatt Russell, reprising his role from Monarch: Legacy of Monsters. Set in 1984, the story follows Shaw on a covert mission behind enemy lines during the Cold War, as he attempts to prevent the Soviets from deploying a powerful new Titan.
Kurt Russell, Wyatt’s real-life father, plays the older version of Shaw in the series, but is not confirmed to participate in the prequel. While the Prague shoot is also yet to be confirmed by official sources, local production both fits the Cold War-era timeline and coincides with Apple TV+‘s local footprint.
Foundation, one of Apple TV+’s other big sci-fi projects, has long called Prague home, with production on season four now fully taking place in the Czech capital. That series has primarily filmed within Prague Studios in the city’s Letňany district, with local production services provided by Milk and Honey Pictures.
The 120-day shoot on the fourth season of Foundation is expected to wrap by June, which would indicate a possible smooth transition into production on the untitled Monsterverse series for both Prague Studios and local crews.
Prague has increasingly attracted high-end television productions, particularly from U.S. studios and streaming platforms, thanks to its combination of skilled crews, competitive incentives, and adaptable locations. A Cold War-era storyline set partly in Eastern Europe would also align with the city’s architectural versatility and historical backdrop.
The untitled Monsterverse series is the latest in a banner year for high-profile productions filming in the Czech capital, coming on the heels of Martin Scorsese’s What Happens at Night, Netflix’s The Age of Innocence and a new Kennedy mini-series, the new John le Carré series Legacy of Spies, and the aforementioned Foundation. Production on The Secret of Secrets, based on Dan Brown’s latest Robert Langdon novel, is also expected to begin in the Czech capital later this year.
Franchise growth continues for Apple and Legendary
The untitled prequel forms part of a broader expansion of the Monsterverse on Apple TV+, following the success of Monarch: Legacy of Monsters. Created by Chris Black and Matt Fraction, the series bridges multiple timelines within the franchise and connects to films such as Kong: Skull Island and Godzilla vs. Kong.
Joby Harold, an executive producer on Monarch: Legacy of Monsters, will serve as showrunner on the new series. He is also overseeing Legendary’s Monsterverse slate for Apple TV+ under a wider development deal. His previous credits include work on John Wick: Chapter 3 – Parabellum and Transformers: Rise of the Beasts, as well as the Disney+ series Obi-Wan Kenobi.
The production team includes several returning creatives from the flagship series, alongside producers representing Legendary Television and Toho Co., the Japanese studio that owns the Godzilla character. Costume designer Emmie Holmes is also expected to return, continuing her work from the second season of Monarch: Legacy of Monsters.
It remains unclear which additional cast members may appear in the prequel, though the timeline leaves room for potential appearances by characters established in earlier installments. No further casting announcements have been confirmed.
Legendary’s Monsterverse has grown into a major cross-platform franchise since the release of Godzilla in 2014, spanning feature films, television series, and other media. The next film installment, Godzilla x Kong: Supernova, is currently scheduled for release in March 2027.
