Sugar Candy (Cukrkandl) held on to the top spot at the Czech box office over the Halloween weekend with a CZK 2.18 million haul to bring its two-week total to CZK 10.42 million. The family-friendly fairy tale stars Tereza Ramba as a young woman who inherits a mysterious house and starts a dental practice for children with the help of an exotic Peruvian herb.
The Czech family film saw stiff competition from Dracula: A Love Tale, writer-director Luc Besson‘s sleek update of Bram Stoker’s classic story. Screening locally in both English and Czech-dubbed versions, the film hits Czech cinemas months ahead of a planned U.S. release next February.
Depeche Mode: M proves that the English electronic band still has a large fan base in Czechia. In limited screenings that ran only a few nights over the weekend, the concert film pulled in CZK 1.84 million; add in earnings from its Tuesday debut and the film led all offerings at Czech cinemas over the past week with CZK 3.89 million.
Black Phone 2 came in fourth with CZK 1.47 million to bring its three-week total to CZK 8.11 million. Though the horror sequel disappointed in the wake of smash hit The Conjuring: Last Rites, it continues to show strong legs at the Czech box office with a modest 25 percent week-on-week drop.
Among new releases, Aziz Ansari’s angelic comedy Good Fortune came in second to Dracula with CZK 1.45 million to rank fifth overall at the Czech box office this weekend. The film co-stars Keanu Reeves as a well-meaning but inept guardian angel who attempts to save a lost soul but instead makes things worse for multiple people.
Chainsaw Man – Film: Reze Arc failed to capitalize on last week’s early preview screenings, and actually saw a decline in ticket sales in its first official week of release with CZK 1.29 million to come in sixth. The performance suggests an Infinity Castle-like run is not in the cards, at least in Czechia.
Nepela, a Czech-Slovak biopic about the acclaimed figure skater and 1972 Olympic champion, pulled in CZK 1.10 million to come in eighth. The movie is the first of two Czech-Slovak films about the figure skater to come out, with Ondrej Nepela set for release next February.
The French-Belgian animated film Chickenhare and the Secret of the Groundhog, a sequel to 2022’s Chickenhare and the Hamster of Darkness that is screening locally in a Czech-dubbed version, debuted in tenth with CZK 1.02 million.
Despite being what might be the director’s most accessible film, Yorgos Lanthimos‘ Bugonia failed to drum up significant interest at the Czech box office, earning CZK 758,000 in its debut to come in 13th. The absurdist comedy-thriller with sci-fi overtones stars Emma Stone and Jesse Plemons in tour-de-force performances.
