‘Inside Out 2’ tops Czech Republic’s 2024 box office, but ‘Waves’ drew most viewers

Disney and Pixar’s Inside Out 2 secured the top spot at the Czech box office in 2024, earning CZK 156.4 million (about $6.41 million) during the year, according to official data published by the Czech Union of Film Distributors this week.

Animated sequels had a big year at the Czech box office, with Despicable Me 4 (CZK 113.7 million, or about $4.66 million) and Moana 2 (CZK 53.4 million, or $2.19 million) also making the top 10 and Kung Fu Panda 4 coming in at number 11 with CZK 45.8 million ($1.88 million).

However, the most-watched film in Czech cinemas in 2024 was Jiří Mádl’s drama Czech Union of Film Distributors (Vlny), which attracted nearly 886,000 viewers since its release on August 15 but came in second in total revenue with CZK 144.5 million. Inside Out 2, directed by Kelsey Mann, was the second most-watched film in 2024 with over 883,000 viewers. Compared to Waves, the animated feature benefitted from higher ticket prices at local multiplexes and more overall screenings, resulting in its box office success.

Other Hollywood features coming in the top ten at the Czech box office included franchise films Deadpool & Wolverine, which earned CZK 114 million ($4.69 million), Dune: Part Two, which took in CZK 107.9 million ($4.43 million), Venom: The Last Dance with CZK 55 million ($2.25 million), and Gladiator II with CZK 46.4 million ($1.90 million).

Local films also scored big at the box office in 2024, with Czech films Her Drunken Diary (Zápisník alkoholičky), directed by Dan Svátek, coming in sixth in with CZK 94.6 million ($3.88 million) and The Last Aristocrat 2, directed by Jiří Vejdělek, in ninth place with 309,300 viewers.

The highest-grossing international film at the Czech box office in 2024 that was not a sequel, prequel, reboot, or animated film was the Nicholas Winton biopic One Life, starring Anthony Hopkins, which earned CZK 21.7 million ($.89 million) to come in at number 24 overall. One Life filmed at locations in Prague during 2022.

In total, Czech cinemas welcomed 13.04 million viewers in 2024, a 2 percent year-on-year decrease. Box office revenue reached CZK 2.26 billion, down 0.9 percent compared to 2023. Despite fewer viewers, the total number of screenings increased by 2.5 percent, and the average ticket price rose from CZK 170.6 in 2023 to CZK 172.9 in 2024.
