The Crow is now playing in Prague cinemas after opening in the states last week, two years after shooting in the Czech capital during the summer of 2022. While the film has received some less-than favorable reviews from mainstream critics, the Czech capital provides an impressive backdrop for the action, and locals will be able to spot a lot of familiar locations on screen.
The stars of The Crow also had a positive impression of the Czech capital, according to recent press tour interviews. Bill Skarsgård and FKA Twigs recently appeared on The Tonight Show to discuss filming the movie in Prague with guest host Rupal, filling in for Jimmy Fallon.
“[Prague] is stunning,” Twigs tells Rupal after the host mentions that she hasn’t visited the Czech capital before. “We [filmed] in the summer, it was beautiful and warm.”
“It’s a really amazing Gothic city. Lots of beautiful architecture and an amazing underground of techno music and warehouses.”
While filming The Crow, Twigs says, she had a lot of fun exploring Prague’s underground scene. The Czech capital’s underground techno scene even inspired her new album, Eusexua, which is expected to drop later this year and marks her first studio album since 2019’s Magdalene.
“I’m obsessed with alternative cultures and subcultures, so to be somewhere brand new that I’d never been, that kind of amazing East Bloc techno warehouse raves, techno kids, I just couldn’t resist,” Twigs tells Rupal.
“So the music [in Eusexua] is inspired by the techno rave scene in Prague?” Rupal asks. “Yes,” Twigs confirms.
While Twigs had a lot of fun at Prague’s club scene, however, efforts to get co-star Skarsgård to come out and party with her proved unsuccessful.
“No,” Skarsgård bluntly tells Rupal after being asked if he partied in Prague during production. “I was just working out and eating a lot of steaks.”
According to a separate interview with Variety, Skarsgård did most of his own stunts for the film and was on an incredibly strict diet and exercise regime during production. Still, he allowed himself a single beer to celebrate when The Crow wrapped filming in Prague. We hope it was a freshly-poured Pilsner Urquell.
“I really loved what I was eating, so I didn’t feel like I had to cheat,” he said. “I didn’t eat sugar, but I’m not a big sweet guy. I guess my biggest cheat would be an alcoholic beer. I celebrated after the shoot.”
Twigs, meanwhile, immersed herself in Prague’s nightlife and came away with the inspiration for her new album.
“I didn’t do any of the stunts, so I went raving in Prague and kind of just immersed myself in the subcultures of Prague for my physical training,” she told Variety. “I raved, I was on the dance floor. I think Bill did something very different.”
The Crow, too, makes good use of some of Prague’s more underground locations. Staying away from recognizable landmarks (the film is set in an anonymous US city, with some exteriors from Chicago also included), the film features underground locations the Vyšehrad Railway Bridge, Florenc metro, and Žižkov Freight Station, in addition to the Rudolfinum concert hall.
