Last Light, a post-apocalyptic miniseries adapted from Alex Scarrow’s bestselling novel, will shoot in locations in Prague and the Czech Republic from September 25. Matthew Fox and Joanne Froggatt are set to star in the new series.
Produced by MGM International, Last Light will premiere on the NBC streaming platform Peacock, yet to be made available in the Czech Republic. The five-episode series will be directed by Dennie Gordon, who previously directed for Jack Ryan, which briefly shot in Prague earlier this year.
Last Light follows a petrochemical engineer (played by Fox) on a business trip in Iraq, who is separated from his wife (Froggatt) and two children in the United Kingdom during a global crisis that occurs after the world’s oil supply is compromised.
Fox rose to fame in the TV series Lost, and also appeared in films such as Speed Racer, Alex Cross, and World War Z. Last Light will mark his first acting appearance on the big or small screen since 2015’s Bone Tomahawk.
Froggatt received three Emmy nominations for her role as Anna Bates on Downton Abbey, a role she has reprised in two subsequent films. She’s also starred in the recent TV series Angela Black and Liar.
Locations in Prague and the Czech Republic will presumably fill in for other cities around the globe in Last Light. Scarrow’s novel was predominantly set in the United Kingdom (Manchester and London) and Iraq, though the events follow a global crisis.
“Last Light is the perfect combination of an action-packed limited series with a compelling family drama at its heart,” Lisa Katz, president of scripted content at NBC Universal Television, states in a press release.
“Led by fan-favorites Matthew Fox and Joanne Froggatt, this sweeping international saga spans several continents that provide a stunning global backdrop, yet is grounded in a relatable and topical story. We can’t wait to share this with Peacock audiences.”
As well as directing the five-episode series, Gordon will also produce the series alongside showrunners Patrick Massett and John Zinman. William Choi, Sydney Gallonde, Rikke Ennis, Patrick Renault and Peter Settman serve as executive producers.
“This is a timely thriller about society’s dependence on oil and its devastating effects on our planet,” says Rola Bauer, president of MGM International Productions.
“Diego Piasek, our head of development told me about Dennie connecting with this important message. Dennie is a multi-genre talented female director and her vision with Patrick and John, has shaped an urgent message for our audiences.”
Local casting agencies are currently seeking stand-ins and extras in Prague to appear in the series. The Czech shoot of Last Light will run across this autumn, from September 25 through December 12.
