Czech box office Jan. 29-Feb. 1: ‘Zootopia 2’ surges past ‘Avatar’ to continue impressive run

In a strong weekend at the local box office, Avatar: Fire and Ash was finally unseated from the top position, but it wasn’t a new release that overtook the blockbuster. In its tenth weekend of release, the Disney sequel Zootopia 2 surged 45 percent to rake in CZK 8.76 million and up its total to a whopping CZK 141.11 million ($6.86 million), according to the Czech Union of Film Distributors. It won’t maintain this pace to surpass the Avatar sequel in total revenue, but it should beat out A Minecraft Movie to become the second-biggest 2025 release at the Czech box office.

Avatar: Fire and Ash continues to chug away, and fell a miniscule 6.2 percent in its seventh weekend of release to take in CZK 6.71 million. James Cameron’s sequel has now earned CZK 173.7 million as the highest-grossing 2025 release at the Czech box office.

Among new releases, Sam Raimi‘s survival thriller Send Help, which led the US box office this weekend, wiped out in Czechia, where it earned only CZK 772,000 to land in at 14th in the charts. The desert island horror comedy, which stars Rachel McAdams and Dylan O’Brien as corporate colleagues stranded after a plane crash, couldn’t even surpass the second weekend of Return to Silent Hill despite excellent reviews.

Send Help‘s minimal earnings were a lot better than Melania, which didn’t even chart in the top 20 despite a lavish rollout across the country. The Prague Reporter saw Melania at a central Prague multiplex that sold a total of three tickets on opening night; Forbes Czech Republic reported that the film sold 17 tickets across the country on its first day of release.

Also not featured in the below list: Iron Lung, which came in second in the U.S. over the weekend. The Prague Reporter caught Markiplier‘s film at a sold-out screening at CineStar Anděl on opening night, and about 20 cinemas across the country saw similar interest, but the film has no official Czech distributor and its numbers were not reported to the UFD. A conservative estimate would place its earnings in the CZK 1-1.5 million range.

The biggest new releases of the weekend were the Czech fairy tale Princezna stokrát jinak, which earned 4.49 million to chart third, and the French-produced animated comedy Pets on a Train, which is screening locally in a Czech-dubbed version and took in CZK 3.19 million to come in fourth.

In revival screenings for their 25th anniversary, Peter Jackson’s Lord of the Rings trilogy topped CZK 4 million between the three films.
