Czech box office Oct. 23-26: Czech fairy tale ‘Sugar Candy’ glazes the top of the charts

Czech films continue to dominate the local box office, as Sugar Candy (Cukrkandl) topped a strong Czech box office this past weekend with CZK 4.05 million. The family-friendly fairy tale stars Tereza Ramba as a young woman who inherits a mysterious house and starts a dental practice for children with the help of an exotic Peruvian herb.

Sugar Candy knocked last week’s champion Side Effects (Něco za něco) down to the second position this week. The Czech comedy from director Matěj Pichler starring Anna Polívková and Martin Pechlát earned CZK 1.98 million to bring its two-week total to CZK 6.08 million.

Coming in third with CZK 1.97 million was the horror sequel Black Phone 2, which resurrects Ethan Hawke’s villain The Grabber in a snowy Colorado setting. The film dropped only 23 percent in its second weekend to bring its two-week total to CZK 5.11 million.

Chainsaw Man – The Movie: Reze Arc landed fourth at the Czech box office a week ahead of its official release, pulling in an impressive CZK 1.4 million from preview screenings at 31 cinemas. The preview total for the latest Japanese animated hit suggests it could reach or surpass Demon Slayer: Kimetsu no Yaiba – The Movie: Infinity Castle numbers when it releases wide from Oct. 30.

Gabby’s Dollhouse: The Movie continues to do strong business at the Czech box office through its fifth week of release. The Netflix family film, which combines live-action and animated sequences, came in fifth this weekend with CZK 1.28 million to bring its total to CZK 17.56 million.

New wide releases wiped out at the Czech box office this weekend, as the romantic drama Regretting You managed just CZK 632,000 to come in 13th; the musical biopic Springsteen: Deliver Me from Nowhere fared even worse despite screening in premium formats including IMAX, managing a paltry CZK 485,000 to rank 16th.

Tafiti – Across the Desert, a German animated film screening locally in a Czech-dubbed version, debuted in sixth with CZK 1.27 million. The Czech thriller Monsters (Stvůry) opened in ninth with CZK 1.05 million.
