Nosferatu (2024)

Prague-shot ‘Nosferatu’ nabs four Oscar nominations, including Cinematography and Costumes

Nominations for this year’s Academy Awards were announced this afternoon and Waves, the Czech Republic’s official Oscar submission and one of 15 films shortlisted for the Best International Feature Film Academy Award, ultimately did not make the cut.

But local productions will be represented at this year’s Academy Awards as Robert EggersNosferatu, which filmed in Prague and locations across the Czech Republic in 2023, scored four nominations for Cinematography (Jarin Blashke), Production Design (Craig Lathrop and Beatrice Brentnerová), Costume Design (Linda Muir), and Makeup and Hairstyling (David White, Traci Loader, and Suzanne Stokes-Munton).

The Nosferatu Oscar nominations are the first for each crew member. Blashke, Lathrop, and Muir are longtime collaborators who have worked on each of Eggers’ features since The Witch. Set decorator Brentnerová has long worked in the Czech capital; her past credits include Prague productions such as Snowpiercer, Carnival Row, and The Wheel of Time.

“There are few surprises in this latest version [of Nosferatu], but the utter authenticity with which Eggers approaches the story is immersive: much like The Witch, we are transported to and get lost in a very specific time and place—only to watch helplessly as evil engulfs this world,” writes The Prague Reporter in a rave review for the film.

“Adding to the eerie atmosphere are spellbinding landscapes across the Czech Republic, which Nicholas Hoult’s character travels through on his way to Orlok’s castle (at one point, he looks out across the Prachov Rocks). Rural locations throughout the story, such as the beaches of Tušť and the Velká Amerika quarry (nicknamed the Czech Grand Canyon) are hauntingly employed; Czech forests have popped up in a number of Hollywood films, but never to such evocative effect.”

Production on Nosferatu took place during spring of 2023 in several Czech locations, with studio production taking place in Prague’s Barrandov Studio and location filming in Žižkov and Karlín, including scenes shot at the historic Invalidovna complex, a former military hospital.

Outside of Prague, filming for Nosferatu took place in Podsedlice, Kostelec u Křížků, Tušť, Milovice, Prachovské skály, Pernštejn, Týřovice, Kublov, the Velká Amerika quarry, the Rožmitál pod Třemšínem Castle and Libochovice Chateau.

This is not the first time Nosferatu has been linked to Czech lands: F.W. Murnau’s original film used locations in what was then Czechoslovakia, and Werner Herzog’s 1979 version was shot in Pernštejn Castle in South Moravia, which was also utilized for the latest adaptation.

A day before nominations were announced, production on Eggers’ next film was confirmed: Werwulf, a 13th-century tale he co-wrote with The Northman scribe Sjón that reportedly takes place in England. A December 2026 release date has been confirmed, but shooting dates and locations were not revealed.

The 97th Academy Awards ceremony will be hosted by Conan O’Brien, and is currently slated to take place on Sunday, March 2 in Los Angeles but could see a change in date or venue as wildfires continue to ravage Southern California.
