Christopher Nolan‘s epic sci-fi film Interstellar will make a grand return to IMAX cinemas around the world this fall to celebrate its 10th anniversary. Prague will get an extra-special treat as, like last year’s Oppenheimer, the city’s IMAX cinema at Cinema City Flora will be the only one in continental Europe to screen the movie in IMAX 70mm, the director’s preferred format.
Fans in Prague will also be able see the 10th anniversary screenings of Interstellar months before the film rolls out in IMAX cinemas in North America, where a re-release originally scheduled for September 27 has been delayed until December 6. Despite rumors of not having enough physical prints, Warner Brothers has cited coordination with a home media release as the reason for the delay.
In Prague, Interstellar will screen in 70mm at Cinema City Flora‘s IMAX theater from September 19. Initial screening times sold out in minutes when tickets were first made available last week, but Cinema City has been adding additional showtimes, which are still available (but going fast) as of writing.
Due to the high interest, look out for additional screenings added for future dates; currently, tickets to Interstellar are only available through September 25 through the Cinema City website.
Interstellar was originally filmed using IMAX 70mm cameras, known for their exceptional resolution—ten times greater than the standard 35mm film. This format, combined with IMAX’s precision sound, creates an immersive experience that few films can match.
The decision to screen Interstellar in 70mm is a nod to the film’s technical achievements and Nolan’s commitment to the highest standards of filmmaking. After the success of last summer’s Oppenheimer, Prague’s IMAX will once again be the only cinema in continental Europe to offer this experience, following a similar exclusive screening of Nolan’s Oppenheimer last summer.
Originally released in 2014, Interstellar has become a modern classic renowned for its groundbreaking visuals, complex narrative, and emotional depth. The Prague Reporter caught Interstellar in 70mm IMAX back on its original release, and was a big fan.
“It starts out as Close Encounters of the Third Kind, morphs into 2001: A Space Odyssey, and then devolves into Contact by the end: Christopher Nolan’s Interstellar, one of the most anticipated films of 2014, is not the masterpiece some may be expecting, but this kind of visionary head-trip is so rare that it can be appreciated for sheer ambition alone,” I wrote in back in 2014.
“It’s a dizzying, dazzling film – especially when seen in 70mm IMAX, which offers up approximately an hour of footage shot using IMAX cameras. The visual element of the movie is its strongest asset, and Nolan is smart to keep things as realistic as possible: the incorporation of camera shots and angles that we are already familiar with from actual space shuttle footage – but have never seen in such detail – was a genius stroke.”
Bolstered by a memorable Hans Zimmer score and starring Matthew McConaughey, Anne Hathaway, Jessica Chastain, and Michael Caine, Interstellar tells the story of a team of astronauts who venture into the far reaches of space in search of a new home for humanity as Earth faces environmental collapse.
Interstellar grossed an impressive $681 million (north of CZK 15 billion) at the worldwide box office during its initial release, with an additional $25 million through re-releases in 2020 and 2023. The upcoming IMAX re-release looks to further boost that tally.
