Adam Sandler in Spaceman (2024)

‘Spaceman’: Adam Sandler’s Prague-shot sci-fi film gets long-awaited first look

The forests of Bohemia are a strange new world for an astronaut played by Adam Sandler in a new teaser for Spaceman that was just dropped by Netflix. Filmed in Prague and surrounding areas of the Czech Republic in the summer of 2021, the 24-second teaser is the first official look of any kind for the long-gestating project.

Along with a brief first look at Sandler in the film, the teaser also comes with a long-awaited release date: Spaceman will hit Netflix on March 1, 2024.

Spaceman is based on Czech writer Jaroslav Kalfař‘s 2017 novel Spaceman of Bohemia (Kosmonaut z Čech), which received some enthusiastic reviews upon release. The movie stars Sandler as Jakub Procházka, an astrophysicist who becomes the Czech Republic’s fictional first astronaut and embarks on a lengthy journey into space.

The film co-stars Carey Mulligan as Jakub’s wife Lenka, while Paul Dano plays (or at least voices) Hanuš, an alien creature who forms a close bond with Jakub during his journey. Other key roles in Spaceman are played by Isabella Rossellini and The Big Bang Theory‘s Kunal Nayyar; while much of the narrative takes place during Jakub’s mission in space, flashbacks will presumably incorporate his time on Earth.

The new teaser doesn’t show much beyond Sandler’s decked-out astronaut traversing what is presumably an otherworldly swamp planet, though in actuality a forest in rural Bohemia. Dano’s creature provides the lone voiceover narration:

“Just like you, I fled my planet. Through galaxies, through black holes, through time. And then I found… you.”

In Prague, Spaceman shot at locations including the Desfours Palace by the Florentinum business complex, the Zelený Pruh swimming pool, Prague Congress Center, and areas in Radotín.

Outside of Prague, Spaceman also shot at locations in Marianské Lázně, Černošice, Bystřice, Slapy, Jetřichovice, Bernartice, the Branov campsite, and rural areas in the Central Bohemian region south of the Czech capital.

Spaceman was directed by Johan Renck (Chernobyl), from a screenplay adapted from Kalfař’s novel by Colby DayStillking Films handled the Prague production of the film in the spring of 2021, while additional filming took place in New York City.

The new sci-fi film is the latest in a string of Netflix movies starring Sandler, which included the animated film Leo, the well-received family dramedy You Are So Not Invited to My Bat Mitzvah, and Murder Mystery 2 in 2023. Look for Spaceman to hit Netflix from March 1, 2024.

  1. Just seen the trailer, this looks incredible. Adam Sandler makes one good film every five or so years, looks like this is his next after Uncut Gems.

  2. Weak strange boring. With a good cast but it just holds no interest to the viewer. Sorry for the poor review. I’m just not seeing this being any kind of award winning movie. 🍿
