Celebrated actor, director, and producer Daniel Brühl will be honored with the KVIFF President’s Award at this year’s 58th Karlovy Vary International Film Festival, festival organizers announced this morning. Brühl joins a prestigious lineup of guests at this year’s festival that includes actors Viggo Mortensen and Clive Owen and director Steven Soderbergh.
In addition to receiving the KVIFF President’s Award, Brühl will present his 2021 directorial debut, Next Door, during the festival.
Brühl, a recipient of multiple European Film Awards, has been a dynamic presence in both European cinema and Hollywood since the mid-1990s. His breakthrough came with 2001’s critically acclaimed The White Sound (Das weiße Rauschen), which was followed by a leading role in Wolfgang Becker’s comedy-drama Good Bye, Lenin!
A major hit across Europe and beyond, Good Bye, Lenin! swept the 2003 European Film Awards and secured Brühl two individual awards: one from the jury and a People’s Choice Award.
Brühl went on to star in the 2004 British film Ladies in Lavender alongside screen legends Judi Dench and Maggie Smith, and won his second EFA People’s Choice Award in a row for his role in the German feature Love in Thoughts the same year.
Beyond European cinema, Brühl has made notable appearances in Hollywood films such as The Bourne Ultimatum, Quentin Tarantino’s Inglourious Basterds (2009), and as Niki Lauda in Ron Howard’s Rush (2013), a role that earned him a Golden Globe nomination and a BAFTA award.
His involvement in high-profile international projects continued with roles in Captain America: Civil War and more recently in the Disney+ biographical series Becoming Karl Lagerfeld.
In 2021, Brühl took his talents behind the camera with Next Door, a dark comedy exploring themes of envy and revenge. He took on the role of executive producer for the acclaimed 2022 adaptation of All Quiet on the Western Front, which was shot in and outside of Prague and went on to win four Academy Awards.
