Families Like Ours, a new TV miniseries from acclaimed filmmaker Thomas Vinterberg, has kicked off its shoot in the Czech Republic in recent days after beginning production in Denmark and Sweden at the end of last year.
Production on Families Like Ours is currently taking place in Prague’s Old Town district, by busy city-center street Kaprova near the Staroměstská metro station. Early next month, shooting will take place around Pařížská street near Prague’s Old Town Square.
Other locations in Prague’s city center utilized by the filmmakers include Salvátorská and Kostečná streets in Josefov, as well as Wenceslas Square.
Vinterberg is coming off a Best Director Oscar nomination for his previous film, 2020’s Another Round, which also won the Academy Award for Best International Feature Film. The filmmaker started pre-production on Families Like Ours in 2021, but his first drama series has taken time to come to fruition. Vinterberg co-wrote the six-episode series with Bo Hr. Hansen.
Families Like Ours traces the effects of a catastrophic flood in Denmark as residents of the entire country are evacuated and dispersed throughout Europe. While those who can afford it travel where they want, others have their fate determined by a government-funded program.
Teenager Laura (Amaryllis April August, making her acting debut) must choose between traveling with her father (Nikolaj Lie Kaas, Riders of Justice) to France, or joining her mother (Paprika Steen, The Celebration), who is being sent to Romania.
Another Round stars Thomas Bo Larsen, Albert Rudbeck Lindhardtl, Helene Reingaard Neumann, and Magnus Millang will reunite with director Vinterberg for Families Like Ours. The cast also includes David Dencik (No Time to Die), Esben Smed, and Asta Kamma August.
While Vinterberg frequently casts Mads Mikkelsen in his projects, the Danish actor doesn’t appear to be involved with his latest series. Mikkelsen recently filmed the Danish epic The Bastard in Prague last fall.
The Czech Republic doesn’t seem to be a primary setting for the series, and Prague may stand in for other locales. Families Like Ours kicked off its shoot in Denmark and Sweden last October, and will also shoot on location in Romania and France.
Families Like Ours is co-produced by Lars Von Trier’s Zentropa (represented by producers Sisse Graum Jørgensen and Kasper Dissing), Film i Väst, and the Czech Republic’s Sirena Film, with support from the Nordisk Film & TV Fond.
“Thomas Vinterberg and Bo Hr. Hansen delivered six magnificent, dramatic, and moving scripts and we can all look forward to seeing them redeemed on screen by our star-studded cast,” producers Graum Jørgensen and Dissing stated through a press release.
Families Like Ours is slated to premiere on Danish TV in 2024.
