Der Kaiser, a new biopic about German football legend Franz Beckenbauer, has begun production in Prague as of this week. Local production company Mia Film is coordinating the Prague shoot.
Set to broadcast on streaming services at the end of 2022, Der Kaiser is being produced by Sky Studios with Bavaria Fiction and NBCUniversal Global Distribution responsible for distribution outside Germany.
Prague locations will presumably fill in for period-era locales in Germany and elsewhere for the production of Der Kaiser.
A long-time sweeper for Bayern Munich, Beckenbauer (nicknamed ‘Der Kaiser’ throughout his career) led West Germany to a World Cup as a player in 1974, and would go on to win another World Cup for a reunified German team as manager in 1990.
Beckenbauer is one of only three people (Brazil’s Mário Zagallo and France’s Didier Deschamps) to lead his country to World Cup victories as player and manager.
Der Kaiser will follow Beckenbauer’s career as player and manager through both World Cup victories.
German actor Klaus Steinbacher will star as Beckenbauer in Der Kaiser, which is now shooting in Prague. No stranger to shooting in the Czech Republic, Steinbacher previously filmed for Oktoberfest 1900 and Das Boot in Prague.
“Franz Beckenbauer made history by winning the World Cup as a player and as a coach. But his brilliant performances off the soccer field also made him a legend,” Frank Jastfelder, director of Sky’s scripted originals, stated in a press release for the new production.
“Together with Bavaria Fiction, we are now bringing the unique icon’s career from the 1960s to the great World Cup final in Rome in 1990 to vibrant life. We are delighted to be working with a great team led by Klaus Steinbacher as ‘Kaiser’ Franz to make this exciting Sky original biopic.”
Tim Trageser is directing Der Kaiser, from a screenplay by Martin Rauhaus. The supporting cast includes Ferdinand Hofer, Teresa Rizos, Oliver Konietzny, Bettina Mittendorfer, Christine Eixenberger, Stefan Murr, Heinz-Josef Braun and Sina Tkotsch.
