Actor Robert Pattinson may be best known to many as vampire Edward Cullen in the oft-derided Twilight movies, but he’s slowly re-invented himself in the years following the series’ end.
After working with directors like David Michôd (The Rover), Werner Herzog (Queen of the Desert), and David Cronenberg (Cosmopolis, Maps to the Stars), Pattinson enjoyed a breakthrough year in 2017 with acclaimed performances in The Lost City of Z and Good Time, both of which were among my favorite movies of the past year.
Now, Pattinson will be honored at the 2018 Karlovy Vary International Film Festival, which screened Good Time last year and will this year feature his latest film, Damsel, in which he stars in the lead role.
A western-comedy about a pioneer crossing the frontier, Damsel was directed by filmmakers David and Nathan Zellner, whose work is also part of a special section at this year’s Karlovy Vary film fest dedicated to Austin-based filmmakers.
Pattinson will also receive the prestigious Festival President’s Award at the KVIFF closing ceremony, which is presented each year to outstanding personalities of world cinema; last year’s honoree was actor Jeremy Renner.
The actor joins an impressive lineup of guests at this years’ Karlovy Vary International Film Festival that includes actor Tim Robbins, who will receive a Crystal Globe at the festival’s opening ceremony, and directors Richard Linklater, Barry Levinson, and Terry Gilliam.
Oscar-winning actress Anna Paquin will also be at the festival to present her latest movie, The Parting Glass, along with director Stephen Moyer (Paquin’s husband and True Blood co-star) and screenwriter and co-star Denis O’Hare.
Also this morning, KVIFF festival organizers announced that Taika Waititi, currently in Prague shooting his latest movie Jojo Rabbit, will be attending the festival alongside producer and longtime collaborator Carthew Neal.
Actor Caleb Landry Jones, who enjoyed a breakthrough year in 2017 with supporting roles in Get Out, Three Billboards Outside Ebbing, Missouri, and American Made, will also be at the 2018 Karlovy Vary International Film Festival to present his latest movie, To the Night.
The 2018 edition of the Karlovy Vary International Film Festival will begin on Friday night, June 29, with a tribute to recently-departed Czech director Miloš Forman.
