Oscar-winning actor Russell Crowe will return to the Czech Republic next year, but not for a film production. Crowe will take the stage as a musician on May 23, 2027, when he and his band The Gentlemen Barbers perform at Prague’s Forum Karlín as part of the European leg of their Indoor Garden Party tour.
The Prague concert will be presented in cooperation with Metronome Prague and Doupě, according to organizers cited by Czech News Agency. The performance will mark Crowe’s first announced return to the Czech capital since his 2023 appearance at the Karlovy Vary International Film Festival, where he was honored for his contribution to world cinema and performed with his previous musical project, Indoor Garden Party.
While Crowe remains best known internationally for films including Gladiator, L.A. Confidential and A Beautiful Mind, music has been a parallel part of his career for more than four decades. The new project brings together several musicians with whom he has worked for many years.
From Hollywood star to longtime musician
Crowe has described music as a longstanding part of his life rather than a recent extension of his acting career. In comments reported by Czech media, he noted that while he has spent roughly three decades working in film, he has also played in bands for about 40 years.
His earliest major musical project was Thirty Odd Foot of Grunts, with which he released three albums. In 2005, he began working with Canadian musician Alan Doyle and subsequently developed the Ordinary Fear of God project. Members of those earlier lineups now form part of The Gentlemen Barbers, including drummer Dave Kelly, trumpeter Stewart Kirwan and pianist Stu Hunter. Guitarist Chris Kamzelas has also performed with Crowe.
Irish singer Lorraine O’Reilly is another longtime collaborator. Crowe met O’Reilly while recording a duet for the Bible Code Sundays album Walk Like Kings, and the pair have performed together since 2017.
The Gentlemen Barbers project has been in development for about four years, although the musicians involved have known and worked with Crowe for considerably longer. The group draws from several styles, including R&B, gospel, country, blues and rock, with Crowe emphasizing the storytelling element shared by music and his film work.
The Prague show is part of a broader international touring schedule for the group. Crowe and The Gentlemen Barbers have also performed in European venues in recent years, with the Indoor Garden Party format combining original material with covers and live storytelling.
A return to the Czech Republic after Karlovy Vary
Crowe’s last major Czech appearance came in summer 2023, when he was a guest of the 57th Karlovy Vary International Film Festival. Festival organizers presented him with the Crystal Globe for Outstanding Artistic Contribution to World Cinema, recognizing a screen career that had already included an Academy Award for Gladiator and three consecutive Best Actor Oscar nominations.
Crowe opened that year’s festival alongside his then-current Indoor Garden Party lineup, performing a free outdoor concert for festivalgoers in Karlovy Vary. The appearance offered Czech audiences an opportunity to see the actor in a setting far removed from his Hollywood work, with a set built around blues, rock and country influences.
The 2023 festival appearance came at the height of Crowe’s renewed visibility as a musician in Europe. At the same time, his film career continued with projects including The Pope’s Exorcist and Poker Face, the latter of which he also directed.
As an actor, Crowe broke through internationally in the 1990s after early Australian films including Proof and Romper Stomper. His role in Curtis Hanson’s L.A. Confidential established him as a major Hollywood star, followed by an Academy Award nomination for Michael Mann’s The Insider. He won the Oscar the following year for Ridley Scott‘s Gladiator, playing Roman general Maximus Decimus Meridius.
Crowe received another Best Actor Oscar nomination for Ron Howard‘s A Beautiful Mind, in which he portrayed mathematician John Nash. He later continued his collaboration with Scott in films including A Good Year, American Gangster, Body of Lies and Robin Hood.
For Prague audiences, however, Crowe’s May 2027 appearance will focus on the other side of his career. The Forum Karlín concert will launch the European portion of The Gentlemen Barbers’ tour, bringing the Oscar winner back to the Czech Republic not for a movie premiere or festival appearance, but with a mic and a band.
