Netflix is still Czechia’s most popular streaming service, but steadily losing ground

The Czech streaming market is showing signs of significant change in the third quarter of 2025. While Netflix continues to hold the largest share, new data from international streaming guide JustWatch indicates the platform is slowly losing viewers to competitors. The data, based on the activity of more than 250,000 Czech users between July and September, highlights shifting audience preferences and growing competition among both international and local services.

Prime Video and HBO Max are the fastest-growing platforms in the region, challenging Netflix’s long-standing dominance. Meanwhile, established players such as Disney+ maintain steady growth, and newer or local services like OnePlay and SkyShowtime are gradually carving out their niches. These trends suggest the Czech market is becoming more fragmented and competitive, reflecting broader patterns in global streaming consumption.

Streaming market dynamics in the Czech Republic are influenced not only by content libraries but also by audience behavior, platform accessibility, and localized offerings. The third-quarter data underscores a slow but steady transformation, as mid-tier services gain ground and niche players attract smaller but engaged audiences.

Netflix still leads in Czechia, but faces pressure

According to JustWatch, Netflix retained the top spot in Q3 2025, holding 27 percent of the Czech streaming market. This represents a one-percentage-point decline from Q2 and a five-point drop from the same period last year. While Netflix remains the most-watched platform, its gradual loss of market share indicates that viewers are exploring alternatives.

Prime Video remains the second-most popular service with a 21 percent share, inching closer to Netflix’s lead. Its consistent growth over the past year reflects its strategy of bolstering original content and leveraging its global library.

Prime Video’s market share increase shows that Czech audiences are increasingly receptive to international streaming options beyond Netflix,” JustWatch noted. The service also comes at a significantly cheaper price point, a major factor for local audiences.

Other established services, such as Disney+, continue to perform reliably. Disney+ holds 13 percent of the market, up slightly from Q2, while Apple TV+ maintains a mid-tier share of 7 percent.

Local Czech platform OnePlay has entered the top six, capturing 6 percent, while SkyShowtime grew modestly to 5 percent. HBO Max, in particular, has been one of the most notable success stories, rising to 15 percent of the market thanks to high-profile releases and popular series that resonate with local viewers.

Czech streaming market trends highlight fragmentation

Year-over-year comparisons show notable shifts in audience preferences. Netflix has seen the steepest decline among major services, dropping five percentage points from Q3 2024, while Prime Video and Disney+ have each posted modest gains. HBO Max has increased its share by four points over the past year, demonstrating strong momentum.

The market is becoming more fragmented as smaller and niche services gain traction. JustWatch measures engagement through user actions such as watchlist additions, filtering by service, and content consumption. This methodology reflects active interest rather than just subscriptions, providing a clearer picture of audience behavior in the Czech Republic.

These trends suggest that streaming viewers in Czechia are increasingly selective, exploring multiple platforms to access specific content rather than relying on a single service. The competitive landscape is likely to intensify further as global streaming giants adjust their strategies and local platforms continue to expand their offerings.
