Bio Oko’s modern upgrades enhance comfort while preserving Prague cinema’s historic charm

Prague’s Bio Oko, one of the city’s most iconic cinemas, recently completed a major modernization of its auditorium and facilities, blending contemporary comforts with its distinctive functionalist architecture. Located in Letná, the cinema has long been a hub for film enthusiasts, attracting audiences for its programming and unique atmosphere.

The renovations, carried out over several months, aimed to enhance the cinema-going experience without altering the venue’s historic character. Improvements include larger, more comfortable seating, upgraded acoustics, modern projection equipment, and enhanced accessibility features.

While the cinema had already reopened to audiences earlier this fall, the city of Prague 7 recently celebrated the official completion of the project with a full-day screening event. The milestone marked the end of a careful restoration that sought to respect Bio Oko’s architectural heritage while preparing it for future generations of viewers.

Modern upgrades meet historical preservation

The renovation focused on balancing modernization with preservation. New seating was installed throughout the auditorium, offering increased legroom and integrated cup holders in the lower section. Acoustics were improved with new sound systems and design elements, complemented by upgraded lighting and a modern projection screen. The venue now accommodates 262 guests while maintaining clear sightlines and audience comfort.

Accessibility was also prioritized, with the addition of a new platform allowing full access to the lower part of the hall. Original wood paneling was carefully restored, and the foyer, surfaces, and restrooms were refurbished, preserving the cinema’s mid-20th-century aesthetic. The project cost approximately 13.9 million CZK, with partial funding from the State Cinematography Fund.

Architects from ARW pb, responsible for the redesign, emphasized the importance of respecting Bio Oko’s original character while adapting it to contemporary expectations. “The goal was to preserve the soul of the space while ensuring it met modern standards for projection quality and audience comfort,” said Pavel Bednařík and Radim Karásek, the project architects.

A community cinema for today and tomorrow

Bio Oko has been a cultural landmark since its opening in 1940, housed in a functionalist building by architects Jaroslav Stockar-Bernkopf and Josef Šolc. Over the decades, it has become a cherished venue for diverse programming, from children’s festivals and live broadcasts to film premieres and workshops.

According to Jan Čižinský, mayor of Prague 7, the cinema’s enduring popularity reflects both its rich history and unique communal atmosphere. “Bio Oko thrives not only because of its programming but also because of the distinctive experience it offers visitors,” Čižinský said. The renovations aim to ensure that the cinema continues to serve as a cultural hub while meeting contemporary expectations.

The modernization also positions Bio Oko to expand its programming for varied audiences, including morning screenings for parents with young children, films for older generations, and interactive events such as Q&As and workshops.

Operational director Prokop Jeníček emphasized that the upgrades reinforce the cinema’s identity: “Bio Oko is modernized, but it still feels like itself. Visitors will continue to enjoy the atmosphere that makes it so special.”

With the renovations complete, Bio Oko enters a new chapter, combining historical charm with modern amenities, ensuring its place as a vibrant fixture of Prague’s cinematic landscape for years to come.
